he!!o everyone new here and reletively new to enfields. Purest run away now! Lol. I bought a bubba'd No 4 Mk 1 for $75. Now while persuing parts to restore it to military looks i found out that many have done 45 70 converts. Now i want one. Im a 5year gunsmith and not afraid to do work but i need details on how this endeavor is done. Id like to know if i could rebore a enfield barrel to 45 70 as i cant find a enfield barrel in 45 70. The magazine issue isnt big. Ive heard the bolt dosent need any mod except for the excrator becasue rim thickness. Can anyone help?

Did you email me a while ago?

Here is the thumbnail on 45-70 conversion.

1. No of course you cannot bore out the original barrel.
Measure the outside diameter, subtract the .45 bore, think about how thin the barrel will become.
A correct blank can be ordered, the OD will have to be increased to avoid having a whippy inaccurate barrel.

2. The 45-70 rim is too large to fit through the front of the action unless you bore it out.
You will also have to relieve the right side of the action to prevent binding.

3. Magazine.
It is possible to modify an original magazine to work, not simple, posssible.
Or you can pay a silly price for one of the now rare Gibb's 45-70 Enfield magazines.
They work, sort of, not impressive.

I no longer do 45-70 conversions, too much work for little (if any) gain.

And no, do NOT convert to .308 due to pressure limits.
At over $3.00 a gallon for gas, I want it leaded, 100 octane, and my windshield washed!
