Hey fellas,

I have a 1917 SMLE Mk 3* which was given to me years ago for free by someone for whom I did some work for in the house.

I replaced the missing inner band spring and screw since they were missing.   I have had a supply of Sellier & Bellot British 303 ammo for years which has been in Ammo cans with desiccant canisters.

I took this thing to the range and I could not get any kind of consistent groups at 100 yards.   And that was shooting from a rest .

I would like to know if there any really good Enfield gunsmiths anywhere near the Northeast?

I would like to have this rifle checked out.

Thanks for any helpful advice.

The wandering shots could have alot of causes..including a bad barrel.
I'm in Canada, so I can't help you re:gunsmith.
BUT..if you watch & listen, theres quite a few members on here that can walk you through the steps, & eliminate most of the concerns - without the cost of a gunsmith.
You sound like you have a fair amount of knowledge to begin with, so this may work out well for you.

Had a similar issue. This is how I ended up suspecting a worn bore with the help of this forum. Clean the bore really good. Go to the range. Shoot three shot groups and measure after every three shots. Tape over holes so you can keep track. If like my rifle, you'll see the groups tighten up after a dozen shots or so. Worth a try!
