I've been stock piling canned food and water for a while now just in case. I live on the west coast just over the border with Washington State and we are on the 'ring of fire'. I have access to a constant supply of ground water even if the power goes out.

I have a "weekender" (small cottage own its own small plot, out away from town). It's pretty self-sufficient for a couple of weeks if needed & I can resupply from the apartment in a pinch. I stock stuff that's non-perishable or long-dated there & here & there's my "crash Kit" bag (BOB) just in case. I rotate stocks about every 6 months so it really is pretty inexpensive as I consume foodstuffs anyway & just replace it, I wouldn't call myself a "prepper" but I got into the habit of being totally self supporting in an emergency in the Service & the training just stuck with me.

Ya, I had a prepper that lived in a trailer on a back corner of my property for a while as he saved up enough money to buy land of his own way up north.
He had piles of kit, dehydrated food, MREs, canned water, fuel, ammo. He was actually very disappointed when Y2K didnt happen. I still keep finding little caches of stuff on my property that he stashed when he was high and forgot where. |

My old Army Bud, Sgt Deshotels lived like that for years!!! only reason he has electricity now was due to our annual get together ! some of the guys started bringing RVs and Camper trailers with their generators !! he got tired of hearing the generators running , so he had electricity ran out to his little A frame cabine, found out he could not do that unless he had a sewer system and running water, so he got those!! then after they put the meter pole in and hooked up the electricity , he wired his house ..... But now he is up in the mountains of Idaho , been there for about 3 months now, he said he may come back in November ... he finally got service for his phone on a ridge saddle and called to let us know he was OK, said he has been surviving off of fiddle fern shoots and other wild forage , said he needs to get him some fatty meet !!!LOL!!!! |

I have a hunting pard (Tony) - he is originally from Lebanon. It was the way life was there. You never knew when trouble would break out - so you stocked enough water, food & fuel for you family to last a week.(He's no prepper) But he continues the practice even now.(He brings his rotated bottled water to hunt camp).
He is now in charge of Emergency services,Health & Saftey at Western University in London. Yes Rhino - I'm talkin bout Tony - your deer hunt bud |

The thing is you do not need specialized foods & so on, just regular foods you'd normally eat but that have a long shelf life & fresh water to cook in. Rice, Pasta, dried, tinned & so on. Then all you do is rotate stock. I have a set of shelves, nothing fancy just vertical poles, horizontal slats & ply sheets for the actual shelves. Its situated so you can access both the left & right side. You take from the right & restock from the left!

I am going to steal that idea! Thanks Shamu!!! I do my own canning. I have lots of mason jars that are dated. I found a jar of green beans that were forgotten about right at the back of the shelf. Nine years old and the contents were still perfect! But i still want to rotate them. Oh, and as a foot note for preppers, did you know that you can hermetically seal ammunition in a glass jar??
