I'd say she is a Lancaster bomber of WW2 vintage. I believe there are only a couple? left in flying condition? The experts will chime in soon I am certain.

My Uncle Walter was killed as the P.O. flying one to bomb Berlin in December of 1944.

Life in the RCAF was hard during the war years.

My Uncle photo hangs in my living room when he made Gunnery Sgt in 1941.

Wish I had meet him.

"Mynarski  (VC) Memorial Lancaster  from the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum at Mount Hope in Hamilton Ontario.  My dad flew in them, Halifax's and Wellingtons before his squadron was moved over to transport duties and flew C47's.  He was a flight engineer but also qualified as a navigator.  He ended the war as a warrant officer having turned down a commission.

Thanks Paddy.  He passed in 2005.  He seldom talked about his wartime experiences.

The AVRO Lancaster  was probably the best heavy bomber of the war. With the B17 a very close second.
It ended the war carrying far more than it's design load without complaint.
The boy's of bomber command have had a rough press after the end of the war; but they deserve the respect and gratitude of us all.
Flying night after night to the 4 corners of Germany. They suffered very high casualties. 1 in 3 did not come home.
It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice!

Paddy: Canada did not have "bombers" in the RCAF during the 2nd whirl at war. All the Canadian bombers were attached to Bomber Command - RAF.

There currently is two Lancasters flying..One in Blighty(owned by the RAF) and our own "VERA".
There will be a third, I'm told - as the RAF has a 2nd Lanc almost complete.
Our Lanc has Packard engines (But that's another story).
There is NO sound on earth like that of a Merlin!! (Realy special when you hear 6 Merlins together).
The Lancaster carried the biggest payload of any bomber in WWII. The BIGGEST bomber was the Stirling, but it carried a smaller payload because of the big spar in the middle. They also had radial engines & couldn't achieve the altitude req'd, so they suffered badly at the hands of the Luftwaffe.
There is NO Stirlings left flying, & there are no Halifax left flying, either. Although, there is ONE restored Halifax at the CFB Trenton air museum. It really is something to see..another beautiful kite.
If you have never heard VERA fly by low & slow..you are much poorer for it.
There was a documentary film made a couple years back called A Gathering of Giants..Ver went to Blighty to ream up with the RAF's Lanc & they flew all over the UK. Its well worth watching - especially if you have a good sound system.
Leo is the main pilot. He retired from the RCAF. He was in the same cadet sqdn as I (#23). I see him quite a bit, actually.Legion functions etc.(& we have the same dentist & some mutual friends).

Actually No6 Group was all RCAF which eventually numbered 14 Squadrons.    This included No 405 City of Vancouver before it was moved to No 8 Pathfinder Group. Some of the squadron, including my father ended up in the newly formed RCAF Transport Squadrons in late 1944. No6 group was part of Bomber Command but specifically Canadian. My mother was a WAAF and she often talked about the Canadian Squadrons. At the end of the war Canada had the 4th largest airforce in the world.

Yup its a real Lanc.
V-RA is one of only2 flying Lancasters, They're working on a 3rd.
Terrible weather, 100th anniversary of the RAF fly in. We had so many RAF officers & Rocks I think you could have invaded the U.K. unopposed!
Many didn't make it.
The RAF chipmunk did, the F35 didn't  Hmm. . .
Should we perhaps be buying T 10s?Clap
