Just back from the cabin Thursday, myself.Whilst there I was conversing with Jim(Swampy)Borland. He runs the 2nd biggest bear outfit up there. This man has made a living from bears all his life.He was telling us that -just a couple weeks ago-a woman little north of my cabin(close by Lake St.Peter) shot a black that wieghed out @ 547 lbs!!In fact there were 3 blacks shot within 10 days -all over 500 lbs!!
The bears are much more numerous in my area this year & HEAVIER!! I note the scat found hard by the cabin 3 weeks ago...we already bought our bear tag.I have no doubt we'll hafta take one during moose or deer.

Congratulations on the bear!
I was lined up on one that stopped forty feet away. It came no closer so I didn't have to shoot it. Bear are still protected where I am, so a shot bear carries a heavy fine. People no longer wonder why I carry a loaded rifle in the woods.

Good work mate, I would love to go hunting in Canada and snot a bear or a moose. I would love to hear the story and see some more pics.

So you eat bear over there? What's it like?

I should be back in Canada on a work visa within a year Big smile
But the winters coming,

And the snow will cover tracks,

And I'll be watching,

Because I'm hunting you

Ya gotta be REAL careful cooking bear, mate! Its full of Trichnae.Plus-its VERY hard to work with. The fat begins to render in your hands when your trying to work with the meat.Even trimming ALL visible fat from the meat-you'll still have to put pans under the meat to catch the fat drippings(or you'll have a mess & a fire, sure!)
The meat varies a tad in taste-dependant upon what the primary source of food is.Ie: if he lives in a garbage dump-leave him there. If he lives near a Salmon run,he'll taste a little fishy.Berries etc..well you get the idea

(p.s: Your welcome @ my cabin durin hunt!)

What are the hunting seasons over there? I know it varies province to province, but is there one particular time of year that is big for hunting?

Here most of the hunting is just culling pest and introduced animals, like deer (fallow, red, rusa, sambar, hog), pigs, my favourite goats, rabbits, foxes etc and we can do that all year to try and exterminate the bastards.
But the winters coming,

And the snow will cover tracks,

And I'll be watching,

Because I'm hunting you

We have a spring and fall hunt in BC for bear.  the ret is pretty much fall with some things running through the winter.  As Hoadie said bear is not the easiest game to work with and the average perso doesnt care for it, mine was a hi alpine bear, so its diet is mostly berries and fawn deer, its a younger bear so the meat will be a lil more tender, how itsa fall bear so its heavy on the fat and grease side.

I would gladly take you for a hunt or 2 on the isle if you here Hatch, however it will cost you as in BC we enjoy extorting our tourist hunters the non resident fees are crazy.

Hatchet; Ontario bowed to pressures of the antis a number of years back-& killed the spring bear hunt.(I never was a fan of it,anyway.Coat is matted & shaggy, bear is skinny etc)But it was a HUGE boon to the northern economies, cause the Americans would come up for it.Now fall bear runs from Sept thru Nov.It overlaps deer hunt.
Out of province licence is-if I recall-$150.00(Cdn) for a deer licence, but I believe its a little less for bear.I'd hafta check

Wicked, I went to Montreal instead of Vancouver island when I was in Canada earlier in the year, but it was a real tough call when I made my decision, Montreal was super rad. A mate of mine I met on my travels was living in Campbell River for the summer and has done big travels of the Island, and got up to the queen Charlottes, has sent me some pictures and it looks amazing, I would love to get up there.

And a goal I have set myself is to do the West Coast Trail as well.

Oh, and on my last night in Vancouver I met a bunch of rad girls from Courtenay who were there for a trashy weekend, they helped me with my ironing, amongst other things. That was a good night. They are all facebook stalking me now.

I don't mind coughing up for hunting licenses, I am sure it will be well worth it for the experience.

I am looking at being back in Canada for Autumn 2010, I should be on a two year work visa.

Hunting both eastern and western Canada would be awesome.
But the winters coming,

And the snow will cover tracks,

And I'll be watching,

Because I'm hunting you

Oh and incase anyone was wondering that bullet in the pic only lost 15gn, which is I think is pretty good.  The was a 150gn sierra game king spitz and I can't find my muzzle data on that load but IIRC it's 2550ish fps, and I hit that bear in the rib @ approx 175yds.  So I like the way that bullet held together
