People, I'm in a dilemma. I'm getting ready to order a new scope for my new L39A1 clone. I'm torn between the 1.5x4x20 and the 3x9x40. Both are Leupold. I currently have the smaller straight tube 1.5x4 on my Sniper clone. Good groups @100 yds. I love the look of it on that rifle. I know the 3x9 will allow me to get more out of the L39A1, but I can't help but think it would look way cooler (and more period correct) with the straight tube rather than the 3x9. Suggestions?

Hobson's choice IMO. Personally I liked the 2~8X32 Nikon Monarch I had. It was considerably smaller & neater than the 3~9X40 from the same line, but it has the widened end. Its discontinued now, but you may find a similar scope for your build. Maybe like this?

A good 1-4x20 should give you results you will be happy with. I don't believe more power will necessarily improve the shooting much. I put a 20x Leupold on my No. 4 for a while just to see how good of groups I could get and honestly, they were not that much better than with the PH5c target peep sight. The rifle is just not accurate enough to make high magnification show a significant improvement.
In my experience, my No. 4 rifle and ammo is capable of 1 to 1.5 MOA accuracy in a 10 shot group. I add at least another MOA to this when shooting prone (probably 1.5 MOA on average). This additional error is made up of holding, aiming, consistent sight picture, trigger release, follow thru, etc. Given the very small differences in bench rest accuracy with the peep sight vs 20x scope, I would think that errors associated with sight picture consistency would amount to about 0.5 MOA. Of course, a poor quality scope could actually be worse than a good aperture sight; but you should not experience that with a Leupold. And, I gotta admit, the 1 inch tube looks more like the part. |

Whewww! Thanks! I was swaying that way. I can get under 2" groups at 100 yd with my Sniper clone and it has a 1.5x4x20. Your explaination on scopes/open sites was enlightening! Thanks again!

Shamu. My Leupold 1.5x4x20 looks very similar to the scope in your picture.

I have no problem with 2X at the bottom end, & The difference between 8X & 9X is marginal. But if I'm mounting a scope its going to give me a little magnification as the trade off for the bulk & weight. |

get a good one - you will kick yourself later if you settle for less , trust me on this - i seldom think of what i paid for the rifle - the glass is important if it shoots well , most all of mine shoot better than i am capable of these days , but i do enjoy those i put good glass on much more than those that i setteled for

Wow. That was quick. Ordered that new scope (went with the 1.5x4x20 Leupold Freedom straight tube, same as on my Sniper clone) from a hunting store about three hours away. He mailed out yesterday afternoon. I got it this morning! Unfortunately, my Addley Precision scope mount isn't here yet. I ordered it 5 days ago from Ontario. Hopefully I get it tomorrow, put everything together as I would like to go to the range Friday! (Hoadie, no fire ban!)
