There is another thread going on about a No5 Mk2 - have a look at thet.

It could be that you have a veeeeeery rare beast or it could be a 'gunsmith special' please get some pics so we can see what it all about.

The No5 Mk1 rifle had, however, one big fault : it was not easy to keep correctly sighted, and suffered from what was known as “wandering Zero”. This was a serious defect and many attempts were made to eradicate t. Trials were carried out with different forms of stocking up and a Mk2 pattern was eventually developed, with which further trials carried out in 1945 and 1946. In the new pattern the stock fore-end and hand-guard were extended to within about ½” of the rear of the flash eliminator, and the rear end of the fore-end was strengthened buy a screw and nut. The band was positioned about three inches further forward to secure the lengthened fore-end and butt. The Mk2 never went into production, and it was eventually decided that the cause of the “wandering zero” was inherent in the design of the weapon and not the result of movement of unseasoned woodwork as had been suspected. The decision not to retain the No5 rifle in British service was made in July 1947 and it was declared obsolescent.

ACxxx is a Fazakerley serial number dating to the last quarter 1947  (possibly October) - however it should be a 4 digit number - not a 3 digit number.

Just a thought - is it possible that the No5 Mk11F is actually :
No5 Mk1(F) ?

(Maybe a poorly marked 'bracket' that looks like a 1)

Ok, I bought it,, the correct serial number is.9/47 mk 1 F AC 370      it is in like new condition, all numbers[except mag] match. stock has some minor nicks and bruises. barrel is pristine, bolt face is like new, no marks or brass stains. ramp looks like a few rounds have been chambered. may go out and fire it later..no way I could claim unfired anyway..all in all another happy enfield owner.[shh don't tell anyone how neat these are]...thanks for the input guys..Dane......

i need to see a lot of photos and they need to be detailed , its a real interesting cooincidence that two individuals claim to have found an item that was produced in a very tiny quantity and never issued , not even recognized as a real rifle , if they both [of is it one ?] found one of these at the same time .............

too big of a cooincidence me thinks ,

"9/47 mk 1 F AC 370 "
Should translate to:
(made in)September 1947, Mark one ,(at the) Fazackerly (factory), serial # AC370

So the stamp says it's a Mk 1, how are we figuring its a Mk 2 when it says Mk 1 right on it?
I'm confused.

People are wider than bullseyes.  The principal reason why the No5 was scrapped was the MOD deciding to equip the entire army with them at the time most armies were equipped, or being equipped with self-loading rifles.  The No5 made lots of good japs without a problem

I quite agree but on another forum there is a serial number list of Faz No5s and for 1947 there are 39 examples shown (from 1/47 to 12/47) and all are 4 digit numbers.

The AB prefix end 9/47 and the AC prefix start 9/47.

So yes - 3 digits is possible but no example has been reported.
