Topic: How to resize & upload pictures Posted: January 06 2013 at 4:38pm |
Your problem is like so many others that try to post pic's on this forum.
Your pics are too large, you need to resize small. The photo uploader can only handle a max of 500 megapixels, thats under a 1000 square picture. The system compensates by compressing the pic in the frame, making it a horrible distorted mess to anyone with a small screen, and the upload time is like forever. I usually just click on to the next thread and ignore these.

Have you tried a different browser. I can see Llazslos' rifle perfectly well using Opera and Firefox. Explorer gives me a lot of problems with this site though.

We have had this argument before Shamu.
The distortion has diddleysquat to do with my computer or the operating systems. It's all about the failure to ensure you remain within the system uploader that is used on this forum. I post on 6 different forums, this is the only one I need to keep advising members to resize their pic's. This is the last poster pic as it appears on my screen, along with the size of the pic he posted. Here is the OP's pic with size...... .......and after I commented. The uploader has only a limited capacity, if the pic is to large it will try to squeeze it into the available frame, this will take for ages and should be an instant clue that something is amiss. It also means the viewers will have a longer download time, bloody frustrating if you cop it. This is the bit you are all ignoring.......... I hope this goes some way to clarifying the problem, it's not hard to resize your pic's, just right click on your photo, scroll to resize and click, the programe will give you options, but will have selected the best/smallest, click on accept or change to prefered size and away you go, your original will still be there, you will just have another pic that says copy of..

Please understand. I'm not trying to argue with you, but help if I can. I don't any issues with posters resizing as it would definitely speed up load times either. However ther eis the interesting phenomenon of some users getting distortion & some not. Thats why I was suggesting there might be something to do that would let you at least see undistorted images. I know it wouldn't do anything for your load times though.

I'm with Shamu on this, the phemomenon isn't simply a function of picture size. It also varies with the browser used. I find it doesn't happen unless I'm using Explorer. Muffet may be right of course, smaller pictures may prevent it. Happy New year anyway...

Here's what I see with the same pics, both resized & not resized. Original size screenshot: The post with the same images resized. Positioning is different, but that may just be a function of where the link was stuck. I'm not saying anything is broken & I agree that resizing would improve some aspects of the picture, such as loading speed. It might simply be some compatibility issue where no one item is causing the reshaping, a question of item (a) not working well with item (b) rather than either (a) or (b) being "wrong" or "broken". How do those 2 screenshots look to you? the image is 730/647k with a 1280X1024 pixel size at 96DPI. What has me confused is why some of us see it fine & others see the same webpage distorted?

You answered this question before, you worked out that it was the uploader automatically resizing every pic to fit it's screen, even if it had to squeeze it in to do so.
The answer to your immediate post is in the size 730/647, well under 1000. Heres the trick, click here... .....and pick one of these........ ......if you look you will see that the image is resized to fit a certain size screen, not all of us use wide screen TV's for viewing, just remember, some of the viewers are using laptops or tablets.

Question for you. When you say: "it's not hard to resize your pic's, just right click on your photo, scroll to resize and click" Where exactly are you right clicking & resizing? I never ever get to see that dialog box I tried this in the forums file manager, on the file name, on the image in the preview window & on the original image on my hard drive. Not one of the dialog boxes that opened had any resizing options! Something is obviously different in how we can manipulate our images, maybe we've discovered a clue to the differences here even if accidentally!

Let me log off for a minute. I'm going to log on with a different browser & see if that makes a difference.

Ok, I'm back with AOL's browser & I still don't get a file browser anything like yours. I'll be back in a bit with a screenshot of what I do see.

Ok, here’s what my file manager looks like. It’s completely
different from yours. I can’t find any way to change the screen layout to
anything other than what is shown here.
A list of filenames down the left hand side, a dialog box
for file uploads in the top center together with a used space indicator & an image preview box in the lower right. I've tried 3 browsers & essentially they all have the same view & options.
Here is how a right click on a file name’s drop down dialog
box looks.
& Here is the right click on the preview image’s dialog
box.
As you can see I never get a built-in resizing option, or
any obvious path to one.
What I usually do is resize the original on my computer
using an image panipulation program & put all the resized images in a file specifically for uploading low-res
images to the web. My usual default setting is an 8X10” image at 96 dpi. This
seems to work well for all the forums I post to.

Just checked against your responses, I will get the same dialogue boxs if I right click on the screen as I see it.
In order to get the resize box you need to right click on a stored photo in you image file, not the image name or code, not someone elses unless you have saved it to your picture file.
You obviously don't have the problem, as you resize anyway, the problem seems to exist when either new members post for the first time or members of other forums post here using the same format they are used to on other websites. It is a problem we will have to live with until the forum is rich enough to change to another uploader, that would be a pity though, as this one is one of the easiest to use. (or place a warning note on the uploader making them take more notice.)

"you need to right click on a stored photo in you image file" Sorry, I'm being dense. Where exactly is this? In the upload editor or elsewhere I just can't visualize it from your description. I tried in my Win 7 image files & its not there either. What am I missing?
