I recently dug a heavily sporterized 1917 Lithgow from the rafters of a friends attic, among other issues it has no rear sight and lots of rust. From what I have been reading, the rear sight is pinned, but there is no hole in the barrel for a pin? there is a ~.125 inch diameter hole on top of the barrel where the sight would sit? Is the rear sight pinned on like the front sight that uses a guide with the hole? Any help would be appreciated!

Hi there the rear sight would be pinned on with a hole drilled across the barrel just below the top of the barrel does the barrel have a H stamped on the flat just in front of the receiver if so it could have been used as a range rifle with a heavy fitted later in its life and so not have had a rear sight fitted good luck and have fun.

we need photos - in order to help - we must see what you are saying , particularly in a sported situation , hard to say whats been done to it ,

a "pinned rear sight" , in our context , is NOT to say a rear sight s pinned to the barrel - it refers to pinning the windage adjustment , its a change made to rear sights of the mkIII/III*

Thx '52Musso, the pin is still in the hole, ground off on both ends to match barrel contour and then has a thin layer of rust covering it. Upon inspection with a 7x loop and good light both ends are visible. Looks to be professionally done, IDK.
