I was given a Ruger old army conversion cylinder from black powder to .45 long colt. Have any of you had any experiences with one of these? They recommend cowboy action loads for the cheaper black powder frame revolvers. I also want to get this conversion in .45 ACP.

Never tried one for a ROA, they are some of the better B/P guns, but you still have to keep the load levels down to B/P or Cowboy Action levels.
I'm no expert, but this might give you some good info: http://www.curtrich.com/reloading.html |

Shamu,
Thanks !!! That's right I spoke with the factory they recommended the same not so much the frame wouldn't handle it which by the way is based on the Blackhawk frame, however there was More of a concern about the aftermarket cylinder. Now the .45 ACP you can shoot factory loads with no danger. |

I have looked into these cylinders for a while since I have 2 .44 and a .36 caliber black powder revolvers. I just have never quite justified the cost, especially since I roll my own "cartridges" and can reload quickly with them. Not trying to downplay your success, Cookie, just looking at a different angle.

Bear I understand, I reload as well both 45 ACP and Long Colt. The black powder arsenal consists of .44 rem, the ruger old army, 45 Kentucky. I just like the convenience of modern powder loading and ease of cleaning but have the smoke powder if needed.

Yeah, the cleaning aspect has to be a huge bonus. I love black powder but it is such messy stuff.

Bear I was also going to have a nice wooden case built to hold the cylinders and old army.
