Sham when they raised the Marie Rose they found lots of staves still in good condition despite being in sea water all those years. Turns out they were for making longbows, all I can say is the guys using them must have been Arnie "I'll be back" Swartzaneggar to pull them back.

In the hands of a skilled bowman a long bow is a real weapon system to this day.

To use a longbow effectively, the bowmen would practice forever! It was the law in England that you had to practice with your longbow every Sunday (don't see why they can't do that with rifles now). Where archaeologists have dug up remains of bowmen, they are easily recognized by the way the bones have developed to accommodate the muscle development to pull their bows. They are accurate enough to hit and kill a man at 200 yards and, of course effective used in what we would call volley fire today at longer ranges. They did use different points for different targets, including armour piercing.
It has been recorded by more than one historian that the fire power and effectiveness of massed bowmen on the battlefield was not equaled until the American Civil War. Even then, bows could be fired at a greater rate than most of the long arms used then. When was the longbow last used in wartime combat? That will be WWII. Lieutenant Colonel "Mad Jack" Churchill (no relation to Winston) used his to initiate the attack on a German patrol in France. He would also go into battle with his broadsword. I recall there is a picture of him on the beaches of Normandy with his sword. Typical eccentric Brit! Anyway, I'm dribbling on...

I agree entirely Pedro we should be allowed to practice daily and the ammo should be provided by the government.

British longbows were circular in cross section, unlike American Indian ones which were flattened in cross section. Because of that major difference they "pulled" more weight when fully drawn than a comparable American Indian style bow.
Amerind bows typically "Pulled" (had a weight to extend fully) 50~65 Lbs of weight at about 35" of draw. British ones pulled closer to 90 Lbs at the same distance. Sorry, old hobby of mine I was a "Bristol Bowman" for a long time before I got into firearms & we used to meet every Sunday. |
