I was reading today that linseed oil is prone to spontaneous combustion, especially linseed oil soaked rags and paper towels. Be careful out there and dispose of these rags and paper towels properly. If anyone here has recommendations on how to dispose of these items safely please share your thoughts with the forum, thanks.

Put them in the burn barrel when I am done.
Sometime I go back latter and the rags are gone. Now I know what happen. I used to think Hoadie took them. |

I think the spontaneous combustion of linseed oil rags is more likely if the rags are screwed up in a ball and thrown in the bin. I tend to keep then flattened out, so any heat generated should dissipate easily.

i agree - no argument , but , is it worth a house fire ?
i am asking because i experienced my family house fire at my father and mothers home in 1987 - granted it was a car that set fire to the garage but ...once burned always lost , i have to say it devastated me more years later for what i lost there , stored for protection , im just this year replacing what i lost , not worth the risk in my mind - i rid my home of the rags at once - if i had a remote barrel i might store them except - what would be the point ? i always have T-shirts and towels that im no longer using not to mention socks and such , there is no shortage of rags [go buy some at the DAV and help out our american veterans] again just sayin ,

for me..my socks & undergear all (unless coloured) end up as rifle patches, The coloureds end up as rags.
(Never did fiiger out 2 things: #1 - 2 socks went into the dryer, & only 1 comes out? #2: Howzit that when I was in my puberty, underdrawers last forever... Now that I'm in my adultery - I'm constantly buying new drawers?? ) |

I agree A Square that it's not worth taking a risk. I will not leave the rags in the house or next to anything that might ignite if they do combust.
Not sure if the type of rag has any influence! (cotton or polyester etc). Hoadie; as for the sock's disappearing; it's the fairies! they also seem to spend a lot of time messing with my toolbox! |

add my name - ill take some free drawers - never know when we might need a clean pair , kinda like when your mother told you not to go to an accident in anything but clean ones ,
the only accident i went to was the one without - nurse had a bit of fun with me when cutting off my pants , i had a bit back inviting her to help herself to anything interesting - but as broken up as i was i wuld not have been much help to her that day , those were the days ??? 1972 , there are things i might do over .....just sayin ,
