I know Russia Had some British Enfield's even before WWII, think some were sent in the lend lease agreements also during WWII But there were Not referred to as .303 British they made there own Ammo called 7.7MM X?? (can't remember the Rest) I had a couple thousand rounds of this as a Kid. It burned clean and was accurate ammo but it wore out a Barrel on a No1 Mk4, Steel ammo can be hard on a Barrel.

The caliber is 7.7 x56R that I was talking about, which is a metric version on a .303 British round and if my memory is correct the 7.7mm Jap round measures the same as the .303

A Square,
No, bullet would be fine. The Russian 7.62 x 54 uses exactly the same dia. bullet as the .303. (.310 to .312")

"7.7×56mmR" is just the metric nomenclature description of .303 British, the actual cartridge is identical.

As I understand, (internet folk law here, only something that I read, I have never done it) the 303 can be modified to shoot 7.62 x 54R simply by running a reamer into the chamber.
Problem is that the fire formed cartridge will have TWO shoulders. Not a problem if you are not reloading and intend to toss the brass. However, I do know for a fact that the 303 chambered barrel can be modified properly by setting back two threads and cutting a new chamber.

A Square,
Russian case is a shade shorter, but would likely work.

ah - nice to know , i had not thought they were similar except in nomenclature , but then it makes sense as everyone was exchanging info back then , the brits and the japs were quite close in development of bayonets which baffels given the japs advanced sword development and yet ...never mind ive wandered off topic way too far ,
thank you for the education , |

It Has been Done, But I keep hearing about Chamber Pressures being much higher in the 7.62x54R I myself would like to Have a Enfield in 7.62x54R and have had a New Barrel Made in this Caliber for my Mk1 No4, But then it comes back to Pressure I keep getting shut down on anyone installing it because they say the receiver and bolt won't accept the pressure. I have Actually been trying to see if some one would make a New bolt and Receiver in 4140 steel But No one is Interested. But I will Keep Hunting.

Just a quick internet look... That Russian round looks like it would be about 8000 psi above max Enfield pressure. Pretty much a shoulder held pipe bomb! Let me know when you have it built, I'll get my wife to fire the first round!!

What Is the pressure of the Russian round?
Or put another way, how does it compare to the 7,62 X 51 /.308" round? |

Russian one looks like max 56,000 psi and change, Enfield 48,000 and 308 60,000 psi. These are quick looks on the internet.

I must be wrong on those numbers. Enfields were converted (new barrels) to accept the NATO 7.62x51. Am I missing something? Was anything in the receiver beefed up?
