Terrylee. Would you be willing to take a moment and measure the thickness of the wood and take a few pictures of the inside and outside along with a couple of close up shots of the inside and outside corners please. Any reference shots I can get will be very appreciated...

No problem. I'll give it a go tomorrow when the light is better.

Shamu, Some more British compasses. WW I, WW II and the Falklands. I find it interesting that the basic design remained the same.

I had the black circular one 2nd from the left for decades & loved it.
By comparison the U.S "Lensatic" one is just not in the same league, particularly if you're sighting with it. I looked at the German-made K&R Meridian Pro & it was a close second, but I couldn't find one anywhere. I ended up with 2, a Brunton (NOT my favorite) & a Suunto "matchbook" which is nice, but still not in the same league. |

Goosic, I have taken your photos and have sent you a P.M. concerning how to get them to you. In the meantime I can confirm that the case is constructed out of 15.6mm planks and the movable brackets of 19.5mm. I attach a photo of the wood which appears to be representative of that used in construction. I expect that somebody who knows something about that field will have no difficulty in identifying it. I hear quite a lot about GPS or map & compass navigating. Its usually an either/or discussion. Personally I find a use for both. in a way they are different & if you learn to use the difference between them its greater than the sum of its parts. Basically one (GPS) tells you where you are & the other, a compass tells you which way you're facing. A compass can't (directly) track & return, & a a GPS can't navigate in unknown territory as it needs "way-points" previously stored to be useful. Examples: GPS isn't effected by metallic ores in the ground or metal carried. Compass doesn't "loose the satellites" Compass with a clinometer lets you "see" grades, which GPS doesn't really. A good compass has "obstacle detour marks" GPS doesn't. |

my new GPS has built in maps - roads and lakes , it can pinpoint me fairly close at any given point and allows mo scan about for where i want to be and go there , my older one needed the waypoints but could take me there and back accurately , mounted on the boat and a mobile i take in the car
i still have my compass , an old boy scout version with the map application scales and such , it works great when ive used it in the past , i also have a set of binoculars with compass and stadia lines for establishing distances , ive used it quite a lot on my boat ,

It sounds like you're pretty well set.
Some like the map compasses with the clear back card, & others like the marching compass with the sighting option. The Brunton I bought tries to do both, kind of just misses at them both by trying to be everything at once. It has a base, a cover, a back cover (which is also the instructions but for a different model??), a sighting flap & rear cover that clips the whole thing together! The biggest problem is that to switch from sighting to map you have to reverse everything 180 degrees & swap( mentally) the reciprocal bearing card for the direct one & vice versa. sighting configuration on the left, mapping one on the right, one is of course backwards depending on what you're trying to do |
