Thanks My gun smith only has 308 gauges. Not that i shoot it a lot , but good to know its not going to let loose. I will try to gets some pics soon. At one time I had 2 the one with out a scope, that I sold for double what I paid 400$ . What are spare mags going for these days? Also on same topic my Mk4#1 has issues ,the bolt closes on a 303 field gauge.Anybody got a source for correct bolt heads? Years ago I was given a #5 and mk4 and like dummy switched bolt heads ,dont ask.The carbine was sold off before I realized there might be a problem. Appreciate the help. |

Dave, I fully support Zed! Do let us see a photo of your L42A1. Now outlandishly expensive, but an historic piece. Last of the Lee Enfield family to see active service with the British, served in the Falklands, was an upgrade of the famous No.4 Mk I(T) and also marked the Lee design's 100 years + with the British Army.

Yes you're right I missed that bit. Yes theoretically the 7.62 is looser. But its more a question of the tolerances in the measurement than the measurement itself.

Shamu; I think for the 7.62 you need a different set of gauges. I believe there is also a difference between NATO7.62 spec and civilian .308 gauges; but maybe someone with more knowledge on that could confirm.

Thanks for the replies, the cocking piece was changed. Seems to have fixed it. Also as stated ,the bolt closes on no -go.There are no indicators on fired brass of any problems. Is the head space on these just a little generous?

Pull the bolt & unscrew the bolt head. See if the striker & spring can freely travel fully under spring tension. It might be as simple as a damaged spring binding inside the bolt body. Also try the action after removing from the stock & reassembling the action & trigger guard. It might be wood binding in the action.

Check to see if the sear is bent or if cocking piece is loose on the firing pin threads. If it has any slack on the threads it can cause issues. The fix is to apply a thin coating of solder to the firing pin thread; use a copper wire brush to remove excess while it's still molten leaving a thin "tinned" coating on the threads. When you screw it back into the cocking piece it should be a snug fit.

Hi Guys Need a little help with my L42. While attempting to fire my L42. it doesn't go off. The cocking piece moves forward only half way ,seems like its get hung up . I recock it attempt to fire and again it stops but slightly out of position to apply the safety . but the if u press down on the bolt , it fires. I had headspace checked ,it will barely close on a no-go .But there are no indications of problems on fired brass. Any ideas?
