I was in the Navy and we still had those funky old wood stocked M-14 as ships weapons.  Didn't get to carry one very often but did have to qualify with it. I usually had a M-1911 another "obsolete" gun us squids had really late. Once in a while it is nice to be the last service to get the new issue.

Very nice FAL there mate
But the winters coming,

And the snow will cover tracks,

And I'll be watching,

Because I'm hunting you

You know hat's funny about this? (sorry, mate)

We did the same thing with Gooody Woody Enfields when we were supposed to switch over to the SLRLOL.
Self-Jamming Rifle, we called it.
Bloody thing would Get what was known as a "Numbah Three" stoppage. You had to have 3 strong men & a boy to un-jam them.

& plastic stocks? You cant butt-stroke with authority with a Mayanyl stockStar.

O.K. Flame suit on, temp set to maximumLOL

Our Major Problem was the point of time when they took our Owens off of us & insisted that we carry M16s as Forward Scouts! We called em Plastic Fantastics & Matels !!!!! On my First Tour ,on my second Tour, Being SAS we were issued with the M16 most of the time ! Most of us,begged borrowed or Stole SLRs & fitted them with the 30 shot L2A2 Clips!

The VC & NVC used to call the SLR the 'VOI SHUNG TRUNG' which translates  to Elephant Rifle! I'm pretty well sure that the M14 came under the same heading

Having said all this, I own a metric FAl with all "synthetic" furniture.
But somehow I just can't get into inch pattern (SLR) type rifles, I guess the memory of those 2 rounds reversed & darn near welded together still lingers.Dead

Now I don't have an RSM telling me the gas HAS to be set on 3 for temperate, 4 for tropical so I set it where it works!
Score one for private firearms ownership.LOL

It's hard to beat the look and feel of real wood.  I have a twelve gauge that has synthetic stocks and I just don't like the look and feel.  Call me old fashioned but man that wood feels good..

The funny thing is that I think I'd be just as unhappy with wood on the FAL. It came with plastic furniture, as the Enfield came with wood. I guess it's just "what you're used to."
There's a guy on another forum who makes really nice custom stocks in several woods for inch(SLR) & metric FALs. His range is from exact duplicates of factory stocks thru exotic designs. I just open his pics, go "That's a really nice looking piece of wood" & go to the next topic.

I can see the advantages of a synt. stock on a rifle.

I just like my Enfield the way it is though if god forbid it ever had to be a 'fighting rifle' again, It would get a synthetic stock ASAP

Shamu;

Good point.

I looked at wood stocks for my AR. Thought that would be cool but that didn't look right either. But it does look right on an AR10 .... First one I saw, about 35 years ago, had full wood stock.

Hmmmmm ... Must have something to do with the first time you see an example.
