Would like to know if anyone knows the where I could find any actions for a  P17 by Eddystone, Winchester or Remington.

Found a source of 26" Mauser Barrels in 25-06 that would be a project worth working on if I could get an action for a decent price.

Has anyone here attempted to use after market barrels on a P17 acfion?  Thought there may be a problem witht the threads matcing properly.  If not then finding and action would be a good start to building a good rifle in 25-06.
Thanks,

I will look at the gun show this weekend, what are you wanting to spend. I seen a few at the one last week here and the same venders will be at this one. An action is considered a receiver and will require to be shipped to a FFL holder. Let me know I will be going in the morning.

M1917 actions are getting scarce with intact rifles pushing $750 stripped actions are getting pricey too ($250-300 for unmodified one in good shape). Your best bet would be to look for one that has had the rear sight wings chopped off they will be about half the price of one with the wings intact. Another option is to get a rifle that Bubba has done his work on I saw one in a pawn shop a while back for $150.  If you get a chopped action or Bubba job the work on the receiver may not have been done well and there may be a lot of fitting to get a scope mount to work.  Taking a barrel off a M1917 is not a task for you average home smith (and many "professional' ones to) A relief cut has to be made on the old barrel where it meets the receiver to relieve pressure as M1917 barrels were put on with about 300 pounds of torque.  Many receivers were cracked by guys who put a cheater  on the handled of their action wrench.  To be honest I would try to do this on another action the M1917 is very strong but to ckunky for a 25-06 sporter.  Most of the serious custom rifles that built on it were built in belted magnums or rounds like the 416 Rigby.  I'm not sure about the thread size of the receiver the issue barrel was larger in diameter than a mauser so there may be an issue in getting a Mauser barrel to work.

Thanks for the info.  That price range is a bit much for a 17 action I think, unless it is in pristine shape.  I can get a Sako action for under $450 and not have any of the attendant problems of the P17 action.  I just have an affinity for the P17 action though and the 3006 case!   Would love to redo one in 25-06 or 35 Whelen.

My 3006 P17 is just about done, finally got scope mounted and have not gotten the machine work done that I wanted.  Had a problem with scope mounts as the rabbit ears were machined off flat and set for Rem 700 action spacing.  Leupold bases have a concave underside that causes the rear base on a flat serface to be too high necessitating shimming up the front mount.  I finnally got all that done ...now its time to sight it in for real.

Leupold doesn't make a flat rear base that I know of.   Asked my favorie gun shop owner and he said they did not.  Hopefully when my machinist gets unbusy he will be able to make the mods I need so it will work.  Between the receiver and rear base he should have well enough to work with.

I have heard that the P17 acion had problem with the torque on the barrell.  Had it rechambered in early 80's and magnafluxed .. turned ok.  Now all I have to do is get a bedding kit to do the action.  Bell and Carlson sent me a stock that needed a dog leg trigger guard and I did not realize it was wrong till I started doing inletting work.  I found the right floor plate on ebay and only paid $10.00 for it!  WOW was that luck!

Now the action sits a bit too low in the stock so that removing the bolt is next to impossible ... so I sanded down the front of the stock for it to clear.   A bit of work to the stock to be done and then it will be done except for the machine work.  Now it looks like a bad a- -  rifle.   Can't wait to get to the range next week.   Am anxious to do that!
Thanks agan for your info.
