Since no one else has comented I feel I should say that this looks like an excellent project rifle.

I hope you still have the nose cap and fittings. I kept the numbered cap and other fittings from the sportered MkIII I've restored till its owner could be persauded to sell it to me. All original wood was long gone and the wood it had been in was warped and split so that stock was no great loss.

Looks like the metal of your rifle is still in fine shape.

Reproduction wood is available and these are fine looking rifles when restored.
If I could afford to invest in any new projects at this time I'd certainly be interested in it.

IIRC the rifles of that vintage came out with a reverse tapered lapped bore, to allow use of MkVI ammunition and give the same velocity as the same cartridge would give from the longer barrels of the Long LE rifles.
A replacement barrel without the taper was authorized in 1917.

Those with the lapped in taper have bores over sized at the muzzle, but this was normal and not the result of wear.

The taper starts about 11 inches from the breech and is wider at the muzzle than further in.

If rebarreled for use with MkVII ammuniton it would be marked with an HV and a SC.

It's a little unclear: were those red x's made at BSA, Enfield, or Fazackerly?

No4 MkI*, Savage 1943,
FTR (F) 1954 Mk1/3
No4 Mk2 ROF(F) 5/50

The images showed earlier on, and its a very interesting rifle.
Looks to be in great shape so far as the metal goes, though sporterized many years ago.

No one else took notice of it so I guess the OP decided to take the images down.
Too bad, looks like a fine rifle to be restored with recently available replacement wood.

i would have enjoyed seeing it , i for one dont dump on anyone for their sported rifles because if i got one from family id consider it an heirloom - something a relative proised in its present form , i hope that was not his issue here

i try to keep my photos acxtive but also know how the photo hosts can mess about with things and sometimes ill delete when they get old
