manufacturing time was for a war time made No.4, or No.1? Also, was it any faster than a peace time made rifle of the same type?

I don't know how long it tokk to make 'em, but after Britain left 300,000 or so lying on the beaches in Dunkirque, they cut ALOT of corners to speed up production. I'm told that practically anyone with machining equipment were given contracts to produce parts & rifles.
I have an elderly friend here that was an apprentice machinist back then, & he was making Bren Gun parts, for English Electric.

Like hoadie says lots of small machine tool factories were turned over to making parts. Sheffield steel works were turning out barrel blanks by the thousand every day. One of the reasons sheffield was flattened in the blitz. The other reason was the machine shops were forging crankshafts for the spitfire and hurricane engines.

Did some reserch into numbers of Mk111 rifles built at lithgow & came up with these figures  In 1914 , lithgow was producing  1600 rifles per week !  in WW2 a comberintion of 3 factories  2 supporting Lithgow  produced 4000 rifles per week !
