he!!o Forum

I have this enfield rifle, wich has been raped allover Cry

The previous owner did complaint about the grouping @ 100 meters ,but it was cheap, and I got the space. And maybe I thought the local gunsmith could "re-crown" it cheap.

But, my question is.

Why does it have this "cut" in the barrel?

Look at this scope mount... jeeez... Bought it anyway LOL

Hoping to get it shooting fairly good again so I can use it for Hunting.
Thank you.

Thats where the rear sight pin was drilled through, its been opened out, but should not effect the performance.
Don't like the weld job though.

Yep, and the groove along the barrel is where bubba took the rear sight off with an angle grinder rather than remove two pins and a screw (one pin in the rear sight base... and the screw holding the leaf spring on.. second pin in the front sight)and just slip it off the front.

That weld on the receiver ring would be enough for me to scrap the whole thing.

Thank you.

Why cant I find any other pictures with this done?

If I deside to close the cut, what should I use? The groove is not visible when front stock is mounted.

This rifle, is the first I have seen for sale in a long time, here where I live in Denmark. Hard to come by, and very expensive to get imported ones. So if I get this shooting straight it'll be all good.

Nice muzzle break!PigCensored
I'd have some very serious reservations about the safety of that barrel & reciever. cuts, grooves, gouges & an unknown amount of heat in a critical area.

There's an old redneck test I'd suggest you perform before dropping a single penny more into that.

Prop the gun in an old a car tyre on an old bench/table, tie one end of a ball of string to the trigger, cover the breech with a sandbag. Back off till you run out of string. Make sure the muzzle is pointing in a safe direction.

Yank the string.Shocked

go back & see what, if anytyhing, was destroyed.
Don't shoot till you see the whites of their thighs. (Unofficial motto of the Royal Air Force)

Yes, please give opinions. We cant all agree, but we can get along.

I have shot the gun, but now I am having second thoughts about its sanity.

Let's have a closer look from thousands of miles away......
Depending on what was used to attach the mount, dictates how much heat was imparted, this may be silver solder, or migged to reduce heat spread.
NOTE the limited discolouration and lack of grind marks.

The barrel shank and receiver metal at the point this is mounted are thick enough to withstand a fair bit of heat, as the locking lugs are at the rear there is no safety impact in that area.
In order to change the structure of the metal at this point, a greater area would need to be heated leaving a larger heat imprint over the entire front receiver ring, not possible with the barrel acting as a heatsink. As an armourer, I have seen much worse than this on rifles still in use. (check out the used guns sites sometime)

As the OP states, a fair few rounds have been put through this rifle.
I would think the inaccuracy stems from the excessive size and weight of the scope, maybe even a bedding fault, but to tell the OP to bin his rifle without first having it checked by an Armourer or Gunsmith, just because our idea of safety is different from someone else's is incorrect, with that type of mindset, no firearm would ever be fired, you never know, someone may have double charged a factory round.Wink

I scrapped an otherwise perfect replacement barrel because the pin hole had been double drilled. They left a similar trench there, I only found out because the pin was loose and I removed the rear sight base to find out why.
The trench was deep enough that it almost cut into the bore. No telling when it would have let go, but I've no doubt that it would have sooner or later.
