hi there
i bought this today down the local flea market for £15, i just saw it and thought it had to have more value then £15, so took a chance on it, something about the history of the piece got me hooked, i started wondering if it had been used in battle and why would someone let it go for £15 it made no sense...unless its fake i guess after a little bit of googling i think its for a lee-Enfield rifle, it has a P1946 stamp on it so i googled enfield rifles and found this forum so thought this would be the best place to ask if anyone can give me any info on the bayonet like is it a rarer model of bayonet or what gun it belongs too, and of course the main one, what sort of price i should be asking for it, any info you can give me would be very helpful right now as im a bit clueless thanks in advance for any help you mite be able to offer, |

It looks like a "blade bayonet No9", standard issue for the Lee Enfield No 4 Mk1, No 4 Mk1*, or & Mk2 rifles.
Look closely at the base of the blade & over the entire casting behind the blade there are probably more stamps giving detailed info, a date & maybe even the serial number of the rifle for which it was issued. |

you paid the going fare , but you were not taken as it appears to be in excellent nick with possible cosmoline intact , it most likely was of the later releases , im going to guess late 1950s vintage , while not rare you cannot loose anything in selling it to someone with a later no4 mk2 that is sans pointy bit ,
as WR pointed out these are often found without the scabbard , because that scabbard fits a multitude of similar blades spanning a number of decades from the no5 through the no7 and no9 as well as the L1 series , these days the scabbards might almost command more value considering the number of folks looking for them , you have a nice blade - find a nice rifle to put it on , just my 2 cents , it is a piece of history soon to become extinct in our political climate , OH and i need to add these come in at least two versions - this the more desireable in my mind as it was the 'original' a later-off one type has a spear point much like the US M1892/M1905 bayonets ... like these - |

thanks for your help at least i now know what i have now....
A square 10.. nothing would give me greater pleasure then to buy a nice rifle to go with the blade, the image shamu put up of his rifle is absolutely amazing what a lovely looking rifle i wish i could own one myself, unfortunately unlike you boys over there, if i even think about buying a weapon such as a Enfield rifle its 5years in prison, yeah its great over here but at least it never rains..lol some people in England are allowed to own guns but they need a license and even then i believe its for framers and clay pigeon shooters who use like 12bore shotgun's, if there is any English people on forum who know different please let me know, i would love to be able to collect old world-war I/II rifles but never looked into the license as iv been led to believe its very hard to get one without some sort of valid reason, so if anyone could shed some light on it id be more then happy to see if it was possible for me to collect the Enfield rifles and alike once again thanks for all the help youv provided already

As A Square said you paid the going rate for the UK, there is a vast difference between car boot prices and "dealer" prices

Not currently in England but from there & was a firearms owner. Eggy & a few more of our resident Brits can keep you more current than I as my info is out of date.
You seem to have 3 or 4 choices. 1: Get a disabled rifle. These were real functioning rifles but have been modified to non-shooting display status only. Known as "dewats". 2: Get a replica rifle. These were never "real" but are non firing copies of real ones. I believe "Denix" is one maker. I am unfamiliar with the quality of these. 3: Go through the process, which is complicated, but not impossible, & get a real one. IIRC you join a club, pass a probation period, get a letter of recommendation, apply, pass the CRO check & bingo you are legal for a firearm. You don't have to be a farmer, but you do need to be a member in good standing of a shooting club. |

What Shamu says is spot on, either collect "de acts" or join a local club and apply for a Firearms certificate to shoot live rifles. I don't know about Hull but there is a club in Bridlington where you can shoot .303 indoors using low powered ammo and I think they also use the military ranges at Strensall ( York).Once you have done your probationary period at the club you can apply for a FAC and acquire what you want ( I have 5 assorted Enfields)

"you can shoot .303 indoors using low powered ammo"
Do tell! Is this .22 RF versions, .32 pistol adapters or what? |

You will need to get into reloading, cast lead boolits and a small amount of fast burning pistol powder.Indoor Home Office approved ranges have a limit of 1700fps and 400 ft lbs a. 303 loaded with a 125 grn boolits and 5 guns of Bullseye is ideal

Nice!
I tried a .32 round ball & 4.7 gr of unique as a pest control round once. It worked well at "inside a barn" ranges. |

It looks to me as though its actually the 'ROF' version: Ishapore. ROF will be stamped on the block somewhere... if you can find it under all that black paint!

This is MY rifle, there are many like, but this one... is MINE!
