After some minor home gunsmithing, I was able to reindex the front sight base on my Ishapore. When I took it to the range again, it was shooting perfectly for windage. However, I am still unsure as to how I should zero this gun for elevation. Do I set the rear site elevation at 200 yards, then zero at 25 yards? That is what I do with my FAL, and it seems to work with the .308 round. I am just not sure. Hope this hasn't been asked before; I searched but I couldn't find anything.

i dont think the rear sight on the 2A was regulated specifically to the 762x51 , i think they were carry over sights - close but not as good as the improved 2A1 , that said you should be able to get it to work with minor allowances

Yes, I was given to understand the 2A sights, regulated for .303 in yards, more or less worked for 7.62x51 in meters.

Cool, thanks for the tip. I will take a look at it. Does anyone know what the British or Indian Army process for zeroing the rifle was? Or did they not trust the average soldier to do that kind of thing?

I crunched some more figures. If you raise the sights to 2" the near = 25m and the far = 200m.
For all my reloading I start testing at 20m. I shoot 5 shot groups. This gives me grouping and velocity. I'm not concerned with the windage or elevation at this stage. I just need to know the ammo is grouping and what speed its traveling. After that, without adjusting the sights I do a 3 shot group at 100m. Next I put it all into PointBlank. I can now see if my 100m elevation is what the theoretical is. It is normally close as damnit. I can now go set the sights using the near point blank range. Once the sights are set I check against the zero distance I require. You just have to remember that at 20m all corrections are 5x what they are at 100m. Oh, and don't forget your fouler rounds. I usually have a bunch or rounds that were either unsatisfactory reloads, or new brass I'm form firing. Never try zeroing with a clean rifle. Dry the barrel and action of any oil. Then shoot a few foulers just to get the barrel warmed up and the oil burned off.
