I have a sporterized No.4 that I really want to turn into a big bore, brush rifle.
45-70 would be awesome, but anything over .40cal would make me happy.
What is the simplest caliber to convert and does anyone know a gunsmith with Enfield experience?

Thanks!

You could e-mail Richard at SIA, he is a member of this forum and does Enfield conversions. He may be able to help or advise you.
It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice!

I have been in contact with Richard. Unfortunately he isn't doing these type of conversions at the moment.

Billy, there are several threads here dealing with some bigger bore conversions.

I'm doing one in .35-303 as we speak.

Other popular conversions are .375-303 and .400 -303 which is called something else.

One guy here was looking at .444 Marlin which could be made to work and there was a Enfield converted to .45-70 by Gibbs.  Called a Gibbs Summit, and there are some around.  check Gun Broker shouldn't bee to expensive.

I'm really only looking to get a mainstream caliber at this point. For some reason, wildcats don't really interest me. That will probably change in a few years, but as of right now...
I would love to find a Gibbs, but they are pretty scarce on the used market.
The other threads, concerning .444 and 45-70 conversions, seemed to have petered out. I don't know if the owners lost interest, or what.
I may just hang this up for the time being and check again in a few years.

I think your best bet is to find a Gibbs Summit.  They are around and if you really start looking I'm sure one will pop up somewhere.

I would buy one if it fell in my lap, but I really don't need another .45-70 as I have a Marlin 1895CB and I don't shoot it all that much.

A Gibbs Rifle would be another toy and I have plenty right now.
