i finaly have good news to report , after all this time they decided he had healed enough to remove the neck brace [he broke his neck] and the trach and ween him from his meds , allow him to try to recover ,

he was back today - no more blank stare and he is responding [non-verbally ] to the therapists efforts , both physical and speech , he actually acknowledged what they were doing and positively accepted extended therapy till he indicated he was tired , he acknowledged knowing who was in the room - produced finger count of number of sisters and brothers - and his son and daughter , his physical self has noticeably improved , he needs to learn to swallow and a lot more but we are most encouraged ,

thats the good news - the bad is they have determined he cannot stay where he is now that he is improved and we are seeking out another step forward at this point , this may be another traumatic experience within the family but its a positive step forward from being a vegetable , we have hope and he is displaying not just a positive attitude but an ambitious one regarding the therapy ,

from oranges we are looking for orange juice - lemons , lemonade .....and for the first time in many weeks the glass is half full

i thank the lord ,  i trust in the basic makeup of this family , they have always been strong and positive , i thank all of you for your prayers  i know they have helped ,

I'm a newbie on here A square 10 and I've just come across this thread and read through it. Thinking at first that it was going to have a totally bad outcome I am more than pleased that now hope flourishes.
My wife last year had a similar life threatening event (not a car accident, but pneumonia) which was life threatening to the degree that the medical staff were obviously preparing me for the worst. She is still with us thankfully, beating the odds after a long and tortuous road and although not totally 100%, three weeks ago she achieved her goal of being able to go back to work as a nurse.

I only mention the above to illustrate that I do have some inkling of what you and your family have been experiencing. I would say to you that it is very important that you have an outlet for your thoughts, feelings and fears, positive or negative, many of which you can't share with those going through this with you as it may be upsetting for them. So if posting updates on here works for you, that's great. You and your family will be in my thoughts.

yes sir , but there is a light out there at the end of the tunnel and i was not certain we would ever see it again in this one ,

my wife and i have been doing things for wounded warriors and the MIA-POW efforts for years , it has been rewarding work , this is the first time we have experienced it first hand in our family so it makes our past efforts more real and more rewarding - every little step forward is a huge leap for the families ,

ive been told , but now i understand first hand , its a life changing experience to be sure ,

it has also caused me to look closely at my will , my living will , my power of attorney and my donor status - all of these need to be up to date and in the form you want them in , im looking at designating a bunch of items that are not listed in my will as well ,
