Can anybody identify this oil bottle which I bought at a flea market last week?

It is 5.75 inches in length and its lid with internal oil dipper is exactly the same as that of a standard Mk.IV.  Its base is stamped with the B.S.A. logo and there is also a "40" stamped into the side of its body which is one long oil chamber.  It fits well into the butt-trap of and S.M.L.E. but then leaves insufficient space for a pull-through.

I have placed a standard Mk.IV oil bottle below it for comparison.

Hi All,

Thanks for the replies.  Unfortunately, I rather doubt that the oil bottle was intended for a machine gun.  Most of the British versions that I have previously come across are of the "can" variety with a larger capacity and none had dimensions which would enable them to fit into a rifle's butt-trap.

It is also different to the standard patterns which were intended for the "Long Lee"  namely, the oiler Mks. I, II and III. All of these were shorter with the Mks. I and II having different stoppers.  The nearest design similarity is to the Mk.IV which was introduced in 1906 in the era of the S.M.L.E.  It has a similar stopper and flat base.

I believe that the mystery remains and any suggstions would be most welcome!

Terry
