Greetings from Norway! Having got back into civilian shooting and wanting to gain some practical information I have joined your website.

I have owned my 1942 Maltby No.4 Mk1 for almost 30 years, and as you can see it is in pretty nice shape. This weapon was bought in the United States, and since then I have taken it to the UK and now Norway.

Having recently gotten into hunting, and not wanting to modify my Maltby, I asked my brother-in-law for a long term loan of his Fazakerley No.4 Mk1 which was "sporterised" at some point in the 1960's or 70's.

The Sporter shoots nicely, but has had a dovetailed scope mount attached with screws installed. This doesn't sit level, and I am hesitant to torque down on the screws, lest I succeed in cracking the charging bridge.

Note that the bayonet lugs seem to have been removed as well.

Upon inspection, the following appears on the barrel forward of the slot for the foresight " BNP .303 2.222" and below that "18.5 TONS PNR" or something to that effect. This must be some sort of proofing mark, and I have never noticed it on my Maltby as it is covered by the foresight.

If anyone has any comments/suggestions on the following I would be keen to hear them.

  1. From looking at the barrel, is it possible to re-mount the foresight? From looking at the forum and from my Maltby it appears that the original foresight slide over the bayonet lugs and thus has space for them. If I can refit an original foresight, what parts are needed?
  2. I am thinking of going to the gunsmith and asking him to fill the screw holes on the charger bridge and receiver/breech. I would then replace the dovetail mount with a picatinny rail. Any thoughts on the various ones produced by Fulton's, AIA and S&K?
Thanks!

Welcome to the forum. You have a nice couple of rifles there.
The numbers stamped on the barrel are the specification .303 calibre 2.22"inch case length and the proof pressure of 18.5 tons per square inch.
Lucky that the sporter barrel has not been cut, so you could refit the front sight, or find a set of Parker Hale target sights.
It would be possible to bring it baclk to military spec if you wanted to; just need the time to find  a good set of wood etc.

I have a friend works in Oslo.Thumbs Up

It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice!

In what way is the rail not level? left<>right or front<>rear?
If its front<> rear you may be able to add shims to level it.

I have both the Fultons & the U.S. made copy the S&K.
The Fultons rail is longer by about 1 1/4" so that may be an advantage to adjust eye relief.

Fultons on a No4 Mk2 with a Nikon 2~8X34.

S&K "Instamount" with S&K proprietary rings (which sit lower than a rail) on my sporterised No5.

Being basically a copy of the Fultons the S&K attaches the same way. There's a large clamp bolt & wedge at the charger bridge & a pair of screws passing through the holes for the existing rear sight which you remove. A very simple 5 minute process of removing 2 pins. There are copies that are nowhere near as good which use 2 opposing screws which are jammed into the receiver sides. I'd avoid them as its not as solid.

Fultons mount: bottom view & top view. The new ones have a Picatinny rail,  not the Weaver slots like this one.

Nice rifles!
The sporter looks like it has a Weaver base installed. If so, then I believe that the picatinny rail made by Richard/SIA (who is a member here) will fit the already drilled holes. Hopefully he will chime in here soon.

Great feedback, thank you!

So the foresight can be re-attached, even though the bayonet lugs have been removed?

I will look into this. At the very least, to have the parts to hand in case I want to fire it with iron sights only.

Thanks Shamu for the advice regarding the scope mount. Sounds like Fulton's is the way to go.

A little update. I have contacted GE Fulton, and they are currently awaiting a re-stock of their picatinny rails. So I have to wait 3-4 weeks until I can order.

Will update once I mount it and post some more pics.
