Might be a stupid question, but here goes. Other than supplying the bullets, does the magazine play any part in the fun ion of the rifle? (I.e, cocking, etc?)

Also, should the front magazine lips ever touch the bolt/bolt head? I ask as I'm in the process of tuning some magazines. Thanks.

Nope none at all, you can even remove it & single load & the rifle works.

I don’t think so, but would like to hear from others. The bolt on mine does touch the platform but not the front magazine lips.
I had a feeding issue for a while then figured out the mag was not seated correctly, the front upper edge of the mag was sitting under and forward of the receiver bullet feed ramp. The bullet tips were catching on the edge of the feed ramp. Not sure if it shows up in these photos, first pic is incorrectly seated mag, second is correct. Look at the exposed lower vertical aft edge if the feed ramp in the first pic. |

I think this is one reason for the (bad) practice of "slapping" the magazine base to ensure its fully seated.

Be certain the auxillary spring is fully seated on the locating tab to start with. Don't forget that the magazine catch release lever gets it's tension from the sear spring. All of the components must work in relation to each other as a result. One thing I have found is the magazine rib on the back can exhibit wear at the point where it catches the release lever and cause that area to become rounded and ineffective. On new magazines I pull the lever up while inserting the magazine so that sharp point won't wear. A worn rib will cause the mag to tilt down slightly making the top of the mag where the feed lips are to tilt as well. I hope this helps and is not too ambiguous?

Yes, and I’ve checked the mag rib, looks good. I think I was not rotating the magazine (bottom forward) when inserting causing the front edge of the mag to sit under the feed ramp. You can’t see this unless you remove the platform and insert the mag. The auxiliary spring looks good and fully seated. Once I figured this out, I no longer had feeding problems. |

For anyone else that experiences feeding problems, these closeup views might help describe a possible issue with mag seating.
In this pic you can see the front upper edge of the mag sitting under the feed ramp. The bullet tips snag in the step between mag aux spring and feed ramp. This pic shows correct seating with front edge of mag behind the feed ramp, no step, mag is sitting a bit higher. By rotating the mag when inserting so that the front of the mag is higher than the rear, it will avoid this problem. |
