Actually I should of deleted this post, I got some misleading info, I was told that the ishapore rifles were stronger then the regular No4 Mk1 and Mk2 because they were made from stronger steel, this wasn’t true. They were made with a different steel designation but the material is near the same. Biggest change was the hammer forged barrels were able to take the higher pressures and I was told they were near identical to the No4 Mk1’s design but there not that either. As for What I am doing is seeing if I can get a Enfield built and chambered in 7.62x54R.

MP... I kinda looked a little more into the round you'd like to mate with an Enfield action. (albeit Wiki). The 7.62x54mmR looks like, performance wise, similar to the .308 Win. please correct me if I'm wrong. That being said, I have to believe components to reload would favour the .308. THAT being said, the venerable .303 is only a tad behind the.308 in ballistics. Some say performance in hunting favours the .303, myself included. That being said, I like to think I kinda think "outside the box", so best of luck in your project! It'll either work, or it won't!

Why mess with it? .303 as is, is probably in the top 3 hunting rounds. Its never let me down..& it will take anything on this continent that you would want to hunt..& keep it down!

One of those rounds that just work. Right bullet weight, coefficiency, with the right speed. Hits like a ton of bricks AND penatrates! I'm biased, but totally one of the best hunting rounds!

I am almost ready to get it assembled, as for the ballistics this will be a 7.62x54r case but the barrel will will be .308 5R 1 in 11.5 twist, and this opens up more reloading options then a .311 bullet. The only concerns that has been raised is the locking lug strength and the bolt head strength. By using these Russian rim case’s there is no bolt or magazine modifications. Except may be a little twig on the mag lips in used magazines.

There's definitely a large operating pressure difference. If I were to go with this conversion I'd limit my loads to .303 pressure levels. It will  negatively impair velocities, but be safe in the action.
Remember the great 7.62/.308Win "blown up Enfield" incidents?

Shamu, I've read about those. One wuote stuck in my mind " a great conversion if you want to wear a Lee Enfield bolt in the face." Please stick to sub 308 loads.
