Took the No5 Mk1 totally apart and put all the metal bits in a paint thinner solution and then applied some paint stripper, allowing that to work. Got all the old stuff off of it using steel wool and then using a very fine wire wheel to get into the hard to reach areas. I used a can of high temp bbq grill/stove paint. I didn't do anything to the furniture and I believe I was correct in doing so. It accentuates the rest of the rifle.

All comments are welcome...

A lot of effort paid off quite nicely.

i cannot fault your results , it looks terrific , is the furniture finish she!!ac ? that would be incorrect , im not saying your wrong here but im seeing high gloss that looks wrong , if it gonna be right make it all right , i like the way it looks in the photos but i cannot tell if its a true - oiled finish or not , that is as important as the metal on these as they served in areas that treated the metal in aftermarket fashion to prevent rust ,

im rambling here - i just want you happy , it looks terrific , as is and id be happy with the results you have achieved , its a fine looking rifle

It's a polyurethane clear coat from a spray can from what the owner before had stated. He claims to have stained the walnut with Cherry and then sprayed it with the clear coat. This one I can't see altering what has been done. After cleaning it all up,I found something else that's not original to this rifle. The front sight is a Lyman Ivory bead front sight, and the flash hider is an aftermarket aluminum one with a hidden set screw under the sight.

I found an original flash hider but,in the meantime,I'll leave this the way it is...

I think it looks pretty fair dinkum!
Hope you can hit something with it. I can't hit nowt, with mine. Yet, my hunting pard shoots it & states its "spot-on".
I dunno...

I'd be careful with that flash hider it it really is aluminum! Remember the old Williams "AlumaBomb" receivers?

Other than that nice job! If you wanted to knock the shine back a bit you could scrub it with some Hessian (sacking) to matte the finish.

I like the contrast in colour from the hardware to the peep site!

I finished cleaning up the bayonet and understand now,as to why the guy just gave it to me.
It is a reproduction. It's pretty and I definitely am not going to complain about it. It fits, looks good on the rifle, and I opened some mail with it today.

I own four of these rifles but one of them has a plastic stock so while I am waiting for a reproduction wooden stock I think I’ll give that rifle the same treatment as you have done. I have it on solid authority that repro stocks will be available by this summer.

I noticed the recoil pad seems to be in fair nick.
They are (apparently) rarer than rocking horse poo

These days somebody might be able to reproduce those hard rubber butt pads using a 3D printer?

I have a question for the OP.....did you spray the metal parts right from the rattle can or did you use an air brush sprayer? It looks so uniform without drips.

I had to sand off the clear coat and then go over it with steel wool. The hardest part was trying to put the rubber back into the frame.
