I smeared wheel bearing grease all over it. That just made it slightly better.

I've had good luck with a rattle can. The trick, in my opinion, is like painting a car. It's all in the metal prep. Once you start painting, patience is the key. Several light coats. My first coat you can probably see more steel than paint! Allow paint to dry between coats. Painting a round object is tough, hang it from a wire and walk around. I also make sure to spray the second or third coat up/down. It always amazes me on how clear stampings turn out.

Make sure you get it ALL off, some old rubbers don't react well to modern petrochemicals!

Glycerine. The stuff we used to put in the kids bubble bottle to blow really big bubbles after they dip the ring into it! It is an amazing natural lubricant!
