Hey all,
So I finally got around to getting some headspace gauges for my Enfields.  My oldest No4 Mk I Maltby was acting dicey and I'd had a case separate the last time I shot it.

Lo and behold, when I tested, the action closed on both the No Go and the Field.  After measuring it the space was right at .074.

The only saving grace is that "Old Maltby" has a 02 bolt head so I'm hopeful it still has a little life left in it.

If anyone has an 03 bolt head that they would be willing to part with, I would be willing to buy if off you.

Let me know.

Hi TH,

I'd recommend you read this first, as there is a lot of gumph out there re. headspace. :-)

Case head separation happens quite often with full length -sized cases that have been fired a few times.
Anyway, have a read as it may help.

All the best,

Richard.

Thanks for the responses, I've tried Numrich's, and SSporters.  No joy at either sites, and the case separation was only one issue (I did attribute that to my resizing practices), the rifle is just starting to act hinkey.  I just want to be proactive.

Thanks again for responding.

You might think of changing the title from "03" which sounds like a Springfield 03a3, to number #3 which is what you want.

Pukka,
after reading all the comments, I'm questioning then if it isn't the bolt head distance I'm trying to correct, then its an overly generous chamber, and my practice of always FLRing my brass; that and my large volume of Winchester, Remington and S&B brass.  I'm light on the PPU brand brass (although I prefer it over most other brass for all my other rifles).

I have seven Enfields: Six No4 Mk 1 (1 Savage No 4 Mk 1, 1 Savage Mk 1*, 1 Longbranch Mk 1, 1 LB MK1*, 1 Maltby Mk1 Sporter (barrel cut), and this Maltby which was my first Enfield bought) and one No 1 Mk III.

Only this one Maltby has given me any reasons for concern.  Guess I'm going to need to learn how to accurately neck resize and sort my brass for each individual rifle.

Cheers

Thud

Let me suggest trying a box of better brass.
Try some "Prvi Partizan" & see what happens.

I may have a #3 in my parts box i will look around and see. From what i found a lot of times a #1 will be bigger than a #2 and so on. If you can figure what you need by measument i will check my bag.

sells101, my current #2 measures 0.647.  calculating out my headspace results in 0.045 which I believe is ok for a field gauge but the head has circular cracking around the bolt face which I would assume comes from a firing pin set too deep.  I would like to improve my headspace and correct the bolt face all in one pass.  If you have a #3, PM me and we can work out a deal.
