I was given this bayonet last weekend. I know it is not a "holy grail", but I would like to know any info about it that you all know. I know it is not a 1916 dated bayonet to match my rifle, but it was free and I was not going to pass that up.

OK , it was made in india , they made 12" blade P07s , and yours looks to have the false edge at the top of the tip , these were made with and without both the fuller and the false edge , they also came with the squared pommel like yours and the traditional rounded one , and wood grip scales , generally black paint finish ,

it is dated 3/45 [march of 1945] , it was made at RFI [roughly the royal ordnance factory india ] there were multiple factories i cant recall all of them offhand but IIRC there were 3 , and it was made before independence so stamped GRI

these were made for the mk3 & 2A & 2A1 rifles but as they are basicly a mkIII it will be fine on your 1916 mkIII* rifle , if your rifle had gone to india to serve it might even have been used together at some time ,

dont know what the D is nor the DC on the crossgurad , most likely unit marks i would guess

Gentlemen... this pattern of bayonet for the SMLE did not exist until just prior to WW2. Before manufacturing this type of SMLE bayonet with a 12.inch blade, the Indian forces used an '07' style bayonet of Indian manufacture, but with a blade of 17.inches, also without a fuller. At some point prior to 1941, India began to cut down many '07's held in their arsnals to 12.inch blades. this is about the time that this particular style of India manufactured bayonet was first introduced.

This is MY rifle, there are many like, but this one... is MINE!
