You were in Desert Shield! Were you based in Riyadh?
I was working there (Rolls Royce car mechanic) when when Kuwait got invaded and during all the build up for Desert storm. But I went on holiday a few days before the war kicked off!
It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice!

No, the 39th Special Operations Wing ended up being sent to Incirlik AB, Turkey. Our wing flew Combat Search and Rescue (CSAR) missions, Psychology Operations (PSYOPs), and a few insertion missions out of there.

I ended up spending 17 out 23 years in Air Force Special Operations Command units (AFSOC), in fact when I retired I was on my second stint with the 919th SOW, 711th SOS.

It was quite impressive watching the quantity of aircraft flying in and out of the Riyadh Air Force base; which is right on the edge of the city. Lot's of AWACS and massive transport planes  (C5's?)
Most of the top brass were staying at the Intercontinental Hotel, which was just up the road from our garage. Interesting times!
