I am a big dog lover. Grew up on a farm, always had at least 3 working dogs (and a couple of pooches) We have had Chloe since she was 6weeks old, she is a chocolate labrador and a great girl. She is trained to poop where I want her to, eat when I tell her, sit, stay...all the usual stuff. We have had her for just over a year......out of the blue, my wife asks me if I would like another dog. I said sure, thinking nothing more of it. Today we went and got a gorgeous, one year old chesapeake / choc lab cross from the dog shelter. I figure, since the lab was free from a farmer and this dog only cost $100, spayed with shots, we are doing ok!! Now I have another dog to train.....I can't imagine living without a dog, how bout you guys (they both fetch and drop on command, I have taken Chloe chipmunk and squirrel hunting in my back yard, one time she treed a chipper and I got it with my air rifle, let her play with it until it started smelling kind of bad...)

Our Golden Retriever started limping badly two months ago (11 years old) and x-rays showed cancer in the lungs that had spread to the spine. What a goofy happy dog Dale was. Broke everyone's heart to put him down. We're down to Mini, the 95 pound Bouvier de Flanders. My wife and I are nearing retirement, and keep saying this might be our last dog for awhile so we can travel, but I don't think it's going to happen. It's just nice t have a dog around.

That dog of yours must be hard work ed, its a giant ball of fluff! It must need a brush every day or two.

The dog we have is a really sooky Bichon friese. Here is a really bad photo of me and the dog after it bought me back a mynah bird (turd bird/winged rat).

It loves to play around with the carcases.

We got this dog from the pound as well, he was a stray running around the suburb of bundeena, and is a bit messed up because of it. We think the previous owners mistreated him because he is a bit snappy around small kids and is scared witless by loud noises.

This dog is good for me because I am a bit alergic to dog hair, although not as much as I used to be when we first got this dog, so I am thinking of getting something like a fox terrier, or if I had more time and room kelpie.

Actually on the RSPCA pet adoption site there are some staffy cross and whippet boarder collie crosses so they might be mad hunting dogs.

But the winters coming,

And the snow will cover tracks,

And I'll be watching,

Because I'm hunting you

Sorry to hear that Ed , We had Sammy ( Golden retriever cross with Collie) Got her when I got out the Army she lasted about 10 years with us. she was already 2 when we adopted her . I could tell her to find Megan and she would take off and then a little while latter her and Megan would come down the drive. It was hard at the end but it was costing us $85.00 + to keep her going. arthritis and elephantituse.
We had a German Sheperd that we adopted from the Sherrifs department and had to put him down after a few years its hard , But its better than whatching them suffer.
we now have Big Dog-- Black Lab , Brownie - Baset Hound , Howie and Henry Border Collie one short hair and one long hair , The Royal Standard Poodle ran off into the swamp , probably wont see her again . and Fat Baby now stays by the naighbors house . Fat Baby is a mix half Rat terrier and Chiuaua or how ever you spell it. the Wife doesnt like that one since it bellonged to my Mom when she was alive. But hey I got to keep the Cat that was for my Mom . Ha! It wont fetch though , Bought the only Cat that I will let stay in the house.
Well Hope you handle the choice you have to make , Sorry to be right to the point But I send My simpathies , I know how hard it is to have to put an Animal that is part of the Famaly as one that has been around for 10 or 12 years down . So my condolences to you and your Famaly.
On a different not we had the first Pony my daughter Had/road buried in our front yard.  My Daughter would not let me put her down... She waited till it went on its own , then we buried her. tried to get my Daughter away for it but she wanted to be there. she took it like a little trooper, with two of her friends for support.
Well buddie let me go allmost time for bed.

Thanks all, it never gets easier.. I only brought it up to point out what a real part of the family they become. My wife's uncle always says it's harder to lose a dog than another family member, because they're the only one that never lied to you, never borrowed any money, and didn't cheat at poker!

Nope , But Big Dog will watch me go into the shop and then hit the Swamp and get me into big trouble with the Wife!
But when he has done some thing wrong you can tell by the way he acts , He wont look you in the eye. and he wont beg to be petted. Its odd how we will notice little things about our dogs but dont pick up criticle hints from the Wife.!?!?!

They are out back together as we speak. My money was on the chesa to try and be dog #1 but much to my surprise, the lab got up and kicked some a$$.....good girl!! The only time it got nasty was when my 3 year old boy got between them, then the lab went for the throat......good girl +1 !! They will get on fine. In my experience, if there is no blood shed in the first hour or 2, its gonna be ok. Great dog stories by the way, I grew up with kelpies and heelers, you can get heelers here, for about $600 each!!!! Kelpies are hard to come by. They have this thing called the Australian Shepherd, looks like a long haired kelpie with a docked tail, any of you guys outside of the states ever see these things before, I know I have not...

Austrailian Sheperd ? had one real good dog , traded here for 8 Bottles of Chimay beer. my buddie wanted her back . the beer trade was supposed to be a joke but he paid up and said if they would of had more chimay he would of got more. ( Chimay beer cost around $5.00 to $8.00 a bottle )so to bad for me they didnt keep alot in stock . He still has her and I have visitaition rights.
But really a go dog is hard to come by ! and you cant replace one ,like for like. just because a Golden retriever you had was the greatest Dog you ever had in your life .Doesnt mean the next one will be.
