Im having another crack at trying to find myself a nice enfield tomorow after work, I know the place that has piles of the things is open, I have the cash and the paperwork.

Hopefully within 24hrs I should be sitting here with my very own enfield!

I am even taking two friends of mine with me as well, might go into the "sefton playhouse" just around the corner from this gun shop.... just might have to leave my mates 17yo girlfriend in the car while we have a drink and have a perv.

HMMMMMMMMMMMMMM! Been here myself a couple of times over the years ! Remember the object of the exersice is to get a Rifle ! Girly shows are there all the time ,so be strong ,buy a rifle (they tend to last longer & are cheaper in the long run than the "Skirts" round the Cnr ) Remember a rifle ya can touch but the Shelias in a Bump & grind show........Ya can't !Wink

very wise words , but be cautioned of leaving the friends girlfriend unattended with your new enfield .....on the other hand , if shes willing to do that - steal her away , shes a keeper

I was a little worried there for a minute... then I remembered Aussie is a foreign language! Over here you could  interpret "have a perv" as a close encounter with one of Dave's relatives.

Good luck Enfield hunting!

So...when ya's go to the "girlie' shows in Oz...I got 2 questions:
#1) Do they take it ALL off? (They sure do here!)
                      &
#2) Do ya sit in the "sniffin" row, or do yas sit in back, with your back against the walls?

2nd question...i dunno about hatchetman but i used to sit in the front row cos they(the girls) grab guys from the front and take ya on stage  and use them as part of the show...hmmmm..memories of single life.Broken%20Heart

Ok, Im back.

I would have posted yesterday but the power supply of the computer that connects to interweb here sh*t itself and after opening it up I was able to use my sparkey skills to diagnose the problem, "it was rooted".

Now I did have a sucessful trip out to sefton, and I was able to resist the urge to go into the playhouse. (That name sounds so wrong, it almost sounds like some rock spider place)

Any way I picked myself up a 1944 No1 Mk111* Lithgow. It is a little rough at the moment but I bought it so I could work on it. The bore was a little dark, but the rifling was square and deep.

I spent 3 hours as soon as I got home today cleaning the thing, I dry patched it out till the patches came out clean, then put a few patches soaked with Tetra copper solvent though it and let it work for about 15 minuites, then patched till the patches were clean.

After that I got my brand new 30cal bronze brush and dipped it in Hoppes No.9 and worked that through a few times and patched till clean.

I then oiled the bolt, and used a tooth brush to get all the crap out of the breach area and around the magazine well and all around the receiver in general.

I was really happy at how well the bore came out. The bloke I bought it from also reccomended I put 10 rounds through it in quick sucession Big%20smile and then immediatly clean it out again. Im going to the range tomorow to do just that.

The bloke knew his enfields, and was good to deal with. He double checked the headspace and test fired it out the back. Very happy with the service, definatly going back there. He said they will re-blue an old rifle for $100, which I might do after cleaning it up some more.

He also had in stock a beautiful refurbished Lithgow No1 Mk111* and a Longbranch No4Mk1 for $500 a piece, which is a steal. He says he looses money on the things but they are perhaps the best enfields I have ever seen.

Oh and it set me back a grand total of $200 for the rifle, and $70 for 40rds of Highland (got it for the brass Dave) and a cleaning rod, jag, brush and patches.

After I left the rifle shop I had about $100 left and joked to the gunsmith about taking it straight to the playhouse. Got in the car with my firends and then drove round the corner and into the carpark of the playhouse.

Breifed my mates g/f on looking after herself "Just stay in the car, were going in for a drink and a dance, If any lebs try and pack rape you, the enfield is in the boot so just open up the ski port and the bolt and ammo is in the case next to you, you already know how the things work from our time in the cadets."

That got a few laughs while I started the car back up again and got out of there as quickly as possible.

When I got home I bareley had time to put the rifle down on the table and unzip the rifle bag before my dad picked the thing up. He almost wet himself when he saw it. I think he loves the things more than I do because back in the day when he was an Army cadet they shot the things and took them out on manouvers.

When I was in the Air Force Cadets we only used them as drill rifles and shot .22LR Brno's. The poor No1Mk111 1916 lithgows they have there are so neglected. Also for some reason a No4Mk1 found it's way into our armoury at cadets.

We didnt ever dream of carrying rifles on manouvers, which we called bivs, which mainly consisted of walking round the bush, not shooting .303 blanks at each other like you could back in the day.

Any way my dad field stripped and inspected the rifle straight away, gave it the thumbs up, and we talked about how good enfields were for ages. My mums inner-city dwelling cousin didnt look too impressed though.

I went out to the range today and shot a 303 for the first time.

I had a big stupid smile on my face for hours.

The first two shots were prone, the first one was fine but the second I didnt really hold it properly and nailed myself a bit, so I changed to sitting, which was much more plesant to shoot. Bit of a difference from my synthetic stocked .243 tikka.

The feed on the rifle is a bit rough at the moment, I was having a little difficulty with it, so I am going to have to clean it out some more.

Anyone got some tips for me about cleaning out the action and the rest of the rifle in general?

Hatchetman, look here;
http://enfieldrifles.profusehost.net/gh.htm - http://enfieldrifles.profusehost.net/gh.htm

The MA is Lithgow the broad arrows are gov't ownership and acceptance marks, the 43 is probably the barrel date, I don't know about the 12 with the upside-down1?

On the feeding, the bullets stack left-right-left-right in the magazine, see if one side feeds easier than the other. If it does, see if the "ears" the small tabs on top of the magazine are adjusted the same. Sometimes these get bent, and need a small (gentle) adjustment.

i apprec iate you lumping me in with the experts here but im far from qualified to give very much info , i will offer what i think i see for pondereance by those more knowledgable ,
it looks to have sn 83127 on the reciever and i cant figure the cross out beneath that - possibly obliterated rack numbers ?
i see a mutitude of inspector marks
i agree the 43 is most likely a date and thought the 12 to be the month , but im not up on lithgow date practice
on the knox i think i see MA/VII that is most likely the the ammo proof ?
sounds like you have a fun one to shoot , its nice to know someone has nice weather to get out in ,

Asquare10, I don't think the 12 is part of a date, the numbers look like they were stamped much later than the 43, with different font styles and much deeper. Not sure if the guy was in a hurry, or if the 1 is upside down for a reason?

Went to the range again today (sunday) and went through the remaining 30 rounds I had, made me very happy. Had a go at shoting a mates chinese nagant carbine, didnt make me as happy as the lee-enfield 303 but still good.

I shot at 50m at a regular A4 target, the thing has to be shooting about 4 inches or so to the right, so im going to have to adjust the foresight. When I was normally aiming it was hitting the right edge of the target sheet!

Oh and it was 30*C and sunny with a light sea breze at the range today, top weather for a range day.

The rifle is working a bit better today, I guess it just needed to work the cobwebs out of it, the bloke at the gunsmiths said it had been sitting out the back for 5 years after they bought it from a dealer that closed sown. It is feeding a little poorly from the right-hand side of the magazine still, but I can solve that by bieng a little more persuasive with the bolt.

I love this rifle.

hatchet..the first few times i was shooting my smelly i was shooting to the right about 2-3 inches...i was told by a vet at the range that it takes some gettin used to the 2 stage trigger..sometimes its a knee jerk reaction to pull to the right just that fraction..keep in mind before movin the foresight.Wink

I will grab some more ammo and check it out. I was shooting from a bench and taking up the first stage of the trigger so I will have to check it out. Though it was very far to the right.

I also had some the the SSAA range officers have a shot from the bench, they got the same result.

They told me to move the foresight, by removing the nosecap and using a punch with a spent 22LR case over the punch to protect the metal.

Just gave my Lee-Enfield the third clean in as many days, its amazing what a rag and a bit of oil can do.

I also pulled apart the clip magazine and gave it a good cleaning out, got all the old dirt and other assorted filth that was in there out and gave it an oiling.

The magazine actually goes in and out of the magazine well properly now that is has been ridden of filth, the bolt travels easily now as well.

I guess the wood work and covered metalic parts are next on the list.

That spent 22lr case over the punch is a brilliant idea. Thanks!

Gonna shoot my No4 Mk2 this morning. I'll be adjusting the rear sight on my 1911 45acp with the punch and case trick at the range.

Sounds like your having a win with her Mate ! I like Sweets 7.62 solvent for the bore ! Be sure though you swab it out with metho after cleaning & if you use a bronze brush clean it in metho after other wie the brissles get eaten away in a couple of nights ! For the Action I like the Tetra spray (The Gun spray ) I dont know whether they still make Gun scrubber or not ,but it also came in a areosole spray! A Old tooth brush also works a treat for scrubbing. I also have developed a passion for Pro shot Jags they look like a piston & you buy one in the bore dia of your choice & they really give great contact with the flutes of the bore with a min sized patch!

I have also been reccomended sweets 7.62 by quite a few other people for the initial clean out of the bore, but I cant find any, I have asked about 3 firearms dealers.

I got reccomemded tetra copper solvent by pretty much everyone, possibly because it is one of the mid range solvents. The gunsmiths at sefton said they only get Sweets 7.62 in for the RAME armourers, and they use tetra when they refurbish old surplus rifles because it isnt as harsh.

I will be looking into getting something like a can of remoil or Tetra gun spray, Ive got enough time to be running round sydney these next few weeks. I am now wisdom toothless, and have an icepack straped to my jaw, poppin panadene fortes every few hours. Thursday looks like the day to go shoping.

Cheers for the tips all.

I like all of the tetra products . They work well for me If you have problems finding the Sweets though I'll get you a bottle & send it over if you like ? I remember when I got my first bottle years ago it was still Sweets 303 & became Sweets 7.62 much latter ! Hoppes #9 is another good solvent though I think they've changed the recipe over the years !

I used to shoot for a Bloke by the Name of Bob Jesser .He ran a Rabbit /Roo processing Plant ! He also Ran a Butcher shop .A Bloke caught his hand in a Mincer once & the first thing Bob did was to move the Tub of Mince & then switched the mincer off ! Trust me when I say Bob pioneered Roo meat for human consumption long before it was ,permitted ! (come to think of it  he pioneered Camel ,Goat ,Horse for human consumption )
