My father gave me one of his rifles. He says its a Lee Enfield. I know it takes .303 British rounds.

So, the markings(I will say left or right side based on looking down the sights.):
it is on the metal parts,

Right side,
just ahead of the bolt.
J
335
On the barrel
4 different types of squiggles, with
J
335

Left side,
on the barrel
395 2.222
BNP 18.5 tons FER []
crown on its side  UR X P something with a 95 in it 77 2 cross swords 2

Just ahead of the bolt, the only thing I can see
BNR stamped over something
something with a 95 in it

So, what do I have?

Also, what can you tell me about the parts, how to tear it down for a cleaning, and other things.

I use it for hunting bear and moose.

I can post pictures if you can tell me how to get them from my phone to here.

Not enough info to identify. Pics are a must.

You describe the rifle's serial number (J355) and post 1956 British gun proofs for a rifle chambered in 303 British. It has a nitro proof (BNP) so it should be able to use any modern commercial ammo.

It could be one of several different makes or models, so I cant even guess as to what it might be..

Not really enough info to tell much, but here goes. (my best guesses.)
You'd need to host your phone pics online somewhere like "Imgur". Once that's done you could link them here using the "direct link" option on Imgur.

This is a military style "SMLE" (sometimes marked as "ShtLE") Or "Rifle No1 MkIII". Yours may, or may not have the silver add on sight.

This is a Military style "Rifle No4 Mk2" (there were 5 sub variants so yours may be slightly different)

& this is a "Rifle No5 Mk1" aka a "jungle Carbine"

Does anything look familiar? There were earlier variants which I don't have a picture of, & may were converted to sporting rifles by having wood & things removed.
Dead
Is anything stamped or engraved on the wrist of the action on either side? Is there anything on the left side flat area?
