Hi. I just purchased a No2 Mk1 today. I put a bullet in it to see what it sounds like. It doesn't make a sound. The da cycles the cylinder and it index's but it won't fire a round,unless. You have to manually pull the hammer all the way back and then squeeze the trigger to make it go bang. Can someone enlighten me as to what I might need to look for. I took the side cover off and everything looks fine. Nothing looks broken that I can tell. I did notice that when the hammer is all the way back you can push on it and it will drop right back where it started from. Luckily I didn't have a round in the cylinder. Help.
This is the pistol in question. Sorry I don't have any updated photos yet. Still two hours from my home currently...

I took it apart and everything looks to be in near new condition. I pulled a schematic off the interweb and double checked where everything should go and that checked out. I have a couple of more items I need to check. I'll do that tomorrow...

I would wonder if the firing pin protrusion is enough?  As a general rule of thumb I have used .045" for firing pin protrusion.  I would think there would be an actual specification on the Internet somewhere.

my thought as well , the firing pin is worn , pure speculation tho , with that hammer it was not intended to cockback but the early ones did , they were essentially a mkI with the bobbed hammer , 

i can tell you that it appears to be a no2 mkI* but i cannot see your markings clearly , i am basing that on the bobbed hammer - some were retrofitted at rearsenal , some were fitted at mfgr , im not sure in your case , 
it is fitted with the type D [mkII] grip scales which would generally put it at the end of that production , is it Q-R prefix ? 1942?  

nice looking revolver - are you shooting 38S&W or original 380s ? hard primers ?

I tried a primed 38 S&W Short. I have some 38 S&W rounds arriving here early next week.

The firing pin looks fine,to me.
These are the only markings on this pistol.

the intertwined ED is enfeilds marking and its a I* , this is their later markings used in 41-42 , O prefix- R prefix , before the war and early war they were using a full ENFIELD over no2 crown MkI over the date in that location , 

the mkI* changes were actualy approved in 1938 , the early walnut thumb rest C mkII grip scales had a brass marking disc in the right scale , they continued from 38-42 , the later D mkII scales did not , they were only used in 42 , in 42-45 the mkI** revolver was fitted with the black plastic 'bakelite' E mkIII thumb rest scales 

the firing pin does look fine in the photo , look closely at the left side of the barrel , it should be marked with the cal 38 "two digit date"and some inspection marks , look at the top and bottom of the hinge in front of the cylinder below the barrel for matching numbers , the serial on these is a letter then number , could be just letter and one number or letter and multiple numbers ,

Yes,it does say 38 on top of the barrel. The barrel, frame, cylinder,and the side plate have identical serial numbers. I think I did okay on this one.

Yes it did. Basically I learned something new.
A 38S&W Short is smaller in diameter and the rim is thinner then the actual 38S&W round. So,to recap. Use the right round and it will go bang.

"O" prefix 9045 , i had thought that , it seems a tad early for the scales but then who knows ? could have been switched out or perhaps they started earlier than though too , its pretty close at any rate , i often like the details on these as there are so few available anymore , and so few venues to discuss them anymore - i know where the experts are , but i like discussing the finds in everyday life , 

if you ever end up with a cut cylinder 455 keep in mind the 45colt rim is thicker , the 45AR is ok thickness but slightly smaller diameter , it will work well , but not in full charge - they must be downloaded to about 600-650fps ,
