Was about to sell all my copper wash steel projectiles, till I read past postings. What I have look like Czeck silvertip pulled bullets. Does anyone know if they are as soft or softer than copper jacket?
Also saw past post asking about loading with trailboss powder. I have tried 12 grains Trailboss  using surplus pulled .30 carbine 110 grain bullets. Quite good results at 100 yards. Had to crank up the sight to 600 yard setting
Im new on this great site------ thanks

Anvil,

I am an importer of Barnaul ammunition and currently am fighting some misinformation being spread around about “steel” ammunition.

I do not know what brand(s) of ammunition that you have – sounds like Hungarian heavy Ball in 7.62 (.310”) and can only speak for Barnaul. A lot of the copper wash ammunition on the market is Chinese –they usually use steel core and a copper type wash on the projectile.

Under Russian Federation Domestic Law, Russian Ammunition is not allowed to be sold or exported with steel core as it is regarded as Military Ammunition if it has a steel core. Barnaul has a lead core in all of their projectiles. I have sectioned projectiles myself and proved that they all have solid lead cores.

The outer cover of the projectile – gilding metal, is a metal called TOMBAC and is a special alloy which includes iron and is especially heat treated and annealed to behave exactly as copper gilding metal. There is NO difference between the TOMBAC and traditional gilding metal, other than a magnet will be attracted to the TOMBAC.  [Incidentally, TOMBAC was used as the metal for the Bronze medals at the Moscow Olympic Games].

Barnaul ammunition is guaranteed to perform exactly like traditional ammunition and there is no adverse affect whatsoever from either the steel cases or the TOMBAC projectiles.  NO ADDITIONAL WEAR.

However, in our neck of the woods, there has been some adverse comment about Russian or steel ammunition wearing out barrels. I can not comment on the other brands out there but can say that Barnaul behaves exactly as brass cased ammunition and standard gilding metal projectiles do in properly constructed firearms.

I have an article on “Why Steel” which I could send to you if you were interested.

Evil is when good men do nothing about it.
