After spending the last two days at the range shooting my rebarrelled M1 (and my No. 4 of course), I’ve concluded the problem with my M1 was not the shooter. It was the barrel.

Shooting prone slow at 200 yds with Creedmoor Match ammo (167 gr Scenar bullet at approx 2700 fps), accuracy was very good (this is .30-06). Below is the first group shot prone with sling.

After the second shot (high in 9 ring), I came down one click (one MOA) on the rear sight. Five shots in the X ring followed, then a 10 at 9:00, then two more in the X ring. And it’s not a fluke, shot several very good scores today with this ammo.

But, the barrel doesn’t seem to like my regular match load of a 125 grain Speer TNT varmit bullet over 47 grains of IMR 4895. I’m going to load up some 168 gr SMK and try that.

Since this is of course an Enfield forum, I’m happy to also report I’ve hit on a sweet load for my No. 4 .303: 40.5 gr of Varget with 174 gr SMK. Shot 100-2x in Prone rapid today and a 99-4x Prone slow. This load has the same POI as my usual match load of 40.0 gr Re 15 with this same bullet (at the same sight setting).
