Depends on what "small" is.
Scope technology changes very quickly. Remember that scope that was top of the range 10 years ago and cost 6 months salary? Well the same quality scope today is one step above "el cheepo".

I would never consider purchasing a second hand scope. I don't know who or how it was fitted. I don't know how it was used or abused during it life time. And who sells a good scope if its still that good (ok there are exceptions)?

One of the biggest mistakes people make when mounting a scope is the quality of the rings used. Bad quality rings can cause the scope to be mounted out of alignment and torqued to one side. When removed this can really mess the scope up and it may never work correctly.

Rather save up a few extra buck and get a nice new scope and rings. Get it mounted by someone who knows what they are doing. Many new scope have fantastic warranties and guarantees on them. So if the are not consistent they can be replaced.

And remember that you don't have to buy the top of the range scope to get a good quality scope. I would love to have a 1-100x75 night vision with built in range finder and HD camera but I shoot just as well with a 4x40.

Thank you so much for the schooling and your opinion and wisdom DairyFarmer. Clap

I posted this for a couple of reasons.......

1)  I am a Disabled Veteran, 1st Group Special Forces, 18Bravo/18Delta, if you know what 18Delta is, then you will understand that I DO know more than the average person about firearms. So I wont be needing anyone to mount a scope for me.
When I stated "SMALL" budget, that was because like everyone else, bills come before play.

2)  Alot of people upgrade the scope they have on a favorite weapon, hunting rifle etc. That leaves them with a extra in the gun safe, that is still in good condition.  Or, they purchase a used firearm that comes with a scope, and they prefer a different brand/style and replace it. Again, leaving them with an extra scope.    I do the best I can at putting faith and trust in people on this forum. So I am really not that worried about someone from here screwing me like some of the folks on ebay might do.

I am getting close to the end of the build on this 303, and I want to shoot it, not put it away for months hoping and waiting to save up enough funds for a good NEW scope.

So again, thank you very much for sharing.
Have a great day
Bill
