I have a Lithgow SMLE #1 Mk3 1944 in good condition. It's been in the family for 3 generations, now. We use it mostly for deer and hog hunting, and it works really well for this.
At some point in the past (before I owned it), someone put a Weaver TO-1 rail. They tapped and set the screws, and it looks like it was done well. I was always under the assumption that dovetail/tip-off rails were no good on larger caliber rifles with recoil. Won't the recoil jar the scope rings loose? I don't have any tip-off rings to try with this, but the fact that it has a rail already mounted makes me want to try mounting a scope on it. Is it worth buying some rings and trying out, or would I do better to find a weaver or picatinny mount that has a similar hole pattern to replace the dovetail? |
