Something you may want to know to save confusion during your search, a magazine for the No1 rifle is actually a no4 type magazine. In other words, No4 is the nomenclature for the type of magazine that fits a No1 rifle. So if over the phone you tell a seller you need a No4 magazine, he may think you are referring to a magazine for a No1 rifle. Be sure to ask for a magazine to suit a No4 rifle, not a No4 magazine. I hope that helps, It's happened before.

well put homer , the nomenclature can be very confusing to the new and even to some older collectors ,
i seldom think about the nuances of the magazine body nomenclature because most dont know or cannot tell one box from another let alone those in the same family , its good that these topics see light from time to time for all ,

"..303 BRITISH LEE ENFIELD 5 Rd STRIPPER CLIPS ..." be aware that those words are unacceptable to many here - some get a bit more than disturbed when that american slang is applied to the charger , be forewarned , lest the wrath fall upon you .....JUST SAYIN

Ahem..... CHARGER CLIP! Pleeeaaaassseeee! CHARGER CLIP! CHARGER CLIP!
(Takes several deep breaths... composure)... let me explain... A stripper clip is used to hold a number of rounds in readiness to be-----> STRIPPED off individually before loading into a magazine----> SEE BELOW! (NOTE:- In 99.99% of cases whilst using this method, the magazine must be removed from the weapon.) A 'CHARGER CLIP'.... holds a number of rounds in place so that they can easily and quickly be inserted into the rifles breach in order to----> CHARGE the magazine---> SEE BELOW! (NOTE:- In 100% of cases whilst using this method, the magazine remains attached to the rifle!) Also.... taken from the period British Military Training Manual: Musketry Regulations (Part:1) 1909 (Reprinted, with amendments, 1914):- Chapter-2, Section-3, Paragraph-36:- 'Quote' : The charger containing 5 cartridges is placed between the guides, and the cartridges forced into the magazine by the thumb. 'End Quote'. CHARGER CLIP! UNDERSTAND NOW!?!

Do not worry about Hoadie.
He comes from good stock. He will just curse for a bit,use their name in vain, and have another beer. Hoadie is a good Brother and a one of the most sane people I know. |

Well..finally, I seem to have an ally! Thank you Sarge. I have felt like a lone voice in the wilderness, trying to educate these heathens about the proper nomenclature. (Now I know how the Jesuit priests felt trying to convert the aboriginals here in the 1700's)
Cheapening the terms of a fine firearm like the Enfield, is like mating a Queen's Plate winner with "Tony the Pony" Hoadie |
