A spanner is of fixed sizes of either 2 sizes (flat or ring either side) or a flat/ring combination of one size.
A wrench is normally adjustable like a monkey (or pipe) wrench.

ya , i know there was a northern front in 1812+ , its not forgotten but no grudge held here , i think new orleans was the southern front IIRC , maybe baton rouge along the way ?

Nice set of tools Dairy Farmer! And yes I agree totally with your description.
But it's not just tools and clips that give us "Brit's" trouble with the American language; don't get me started on bit's of car's, it get's messy!!

what the heck - we even use that terminoligy here , +1 dairy farmer , i was taught that terminoligy for the various wrenches in my tool box by my grandfathers and my father , ill not speak for my son - he is near 30 now so he can speak for himself but i used it while raising him ,
lord knows what he got exposed to in school - im not a fan of our liberal education system , they tend to think only those uneducated use such implements - but i did tell him when he was young so hopefully he will remember it one day , a man that cant speak the language is uneducated - one that cant use the tools is handicapped ,
