I just bought a 1941 Long Branch No. 4 MK1 (no star) from a guy for 400 bucks. 1L serial number block. I went to look at a 22 he had and he had a few other guns and this rifle was sitting against the wall. It has a 2 groove barrel and has a matching bolt and magazine. Bore is PERFECT. He threw in 2 1950 bandoliers with Radway Green ammo on stripper clips in the bandoliers and 2 boxes of commercial non corrosive ammo as well as a bayonet(not matching). Did I get a good deal and if so what is the package actually worth? Just asking out of interest and not looking to sell this. Any info is appreciated because I am not really an Enfield nut but have a nose for when I probably should buy something.
Thanks in advance guys. |

You Did Fantastic No star Longbranchs are very rare total production of the no star was about 10,000
They typically sell for twice what you paid for it.

The big question is is it still in military configuration? If so, you got an outstanding deal. If not, it still is a good deal due to the rarity of those early no star Long Branch rifles. Please post some pictures. We would love to see it.

You are a nut now ! LOL Hang that RG ammo on the wall and get some PPU 303 BOXER primed ball from SGAMMO. They also have some MEN 303 ball but it's BERDAN primed and $250 for 500 rounds. Good shooting stuff. Long Branch made some of the best shooting #4's. Enjoy |

Here are the rest of the pics. Some markings on the stock are strange to me. Also, the rifle is missing the front stacking swivel. Does anyone know where I can find one?
Thanks |

OK - you did fine as referenced above , the arrow in the "U" indicates south african service i believe and that is not a detriment either , it looks clean and original , the radway green ammo is a big plus , the pointy bit [depending on which one you got] is as well , if its an SA blade version so marked it is a plus plus ,, if its a spike its still a plus - the SA service might have seen both , that vintage rifle would originaly been issued with a spike of the same era , there is no corrilation of mfgr of bayos to rifles in issueing , a longbranch spikewould be fun , yet as a collector id like an SA blade with my SA rifle - just me ,

Thanks for the info. I really appreciate your expertise. I don't know if you could see it but right behind the socket there is a number 5 or a blocky letter S inside a square. Do you know what that means?

Stacking swivels were not issued with No4 rifles they'd been discontinuity by the time the No4 was made in service. The only comparable thing I know of was the Turkish issue stacking rod.

the squared "S" in a box would mean it has a savage bit on it , most likely changed in service but could be after - would not have been original , not a bad thing either ,

Ok. Thanks guys. I kinda thought it might be a Savage stock but wasn't sure. I really appreciate the help. I am definitely addicted now. Interesting note about the stacking swivel. Didn't know that. The socket I was referring to was the round receiver extension thing that the buttstock mates up to.

Remember to save the RG ammo and get some PPU or MEN from SG Ammo. They will ship to your door. What number bolt head is on your LB ? There is nothing wrong with having a few Savage bits on the LB. It's a lot more common than people admit. ..MJ..

The bolt head appears to be a 3. Visible in one of the photos.
Probably worth checking the headspace just to make sure all is well.
