there is a gorgeous unfired No4 about 45 minutes from my house.  if I didn't already have one I would be sorely tempted.  price is 1499.00 though which is a lot.  also found a 1944 Garand with great barrel readings 1 muzzle and 2 throat) and nice service wood about an hour away for 1200.00.  which is more tempting?

Unfired but unwrapped?
That's about double what they actually sell for. I wouldn't go a penny over 800.

really.  I would def buy it for 800.00.  haven't seen an unfired one anywhere near 800.00 on gunbroker or gunsamerica.  yes unwrapped.  It wouldn't be unfired for long lol.

There was an almost identical conversation on a different site just a few days ago.
A dealer I know who does gun-shows & several others agreed the GB's prices are wildly exaggerated & they have sold for 700~850 several times recently.

Devrep, seeing as you already own one, personally I would buy the M1 Garand. I shoot my buddies Garand several times a year and it is a fun rifle to shoot!

As you say, it wouldn't stay unfired for very long... then it is a $600-700 rifle. Expensive few shots!

If it is unfired then it has not been proofed.

maybe just me but I have zero interest in a mummy wrapped rifle.  can't even admire it.  I'm not a museum.  I would however really enjoy unwrapping and cleaning one up.  nothing like that new bike smell er rifle.  I'm a dirt bike freak, sorry.

agreed!  the guy has 2 garands for sale.  one for 1200 and one for 1400.  he got them both at CMP years ago and has all the papers, hang tags, hard cases for them.  I could get a similar one at CMP for 850.00 or so probably but would have to drive a thousand miles round trip.  it would cost me the difference in gas and a motel.

You can order a M1 online from the CMP and have it shipped to you for no extra charge.

yes I can but..luck of the draw what you get.  may get a barrel with bad readings.  may get pitted metal.  you can order the new grade where they all get new wood and all the metal gets reparkerized but I don't want a restored one.  also, they require you send them a copy of your birth certificate to prove citizenship.  I think that's great, but with the way things are these days with identity theft no one gets my personal info, esp SS# or birth certificate.

they already have it - its the government and do not believe that BS that they dont keep records or preserve a data base , they cant trace anything between departments - they never use the IRS as a weapon , why do you think they built this big government ?

only thing they cant trace are illegal immigrants and criminals ................

The US doesn't need to trace all the illegal immigrants. They know where they are... Canada!
