The difference IS captured by the markings - the "*" after the "Mk 1" would be on the rifle with the removal slot in the boltway rather the catch at the rear?

The "star" marking denotes a small change to the pattern of the rifle - in the case of No 4's, it is the method of bolt release which was the change made in design.

captainjohn.
You describe in your one comment that one of your rifles appears to have had the serial number and the No4Mk1 filed down and then electro stenciled over again. Please check for a FTR stamp and a date stamp following the FTR. Does this rifle have a small screw going through the wood just over the trigger and does the trigger hang from the butt socket of the receiver instead of the trigger guard? If so,does the the No4Mk1 stencil look like this.
No4Mk1/2,or No4Mk1/3.

The OP described disassembling the bolt and unscrewing the striker from the cocking piece.  It seems odd that it now won’t screw back together. If you are reassembling the bolt, it is sometimes a bit tricky to get the threads to start under the striker spring tension.  See if the cocking piece will screw on to the striker with the striker out of the bolt and spring removed off the striker.  If it came off, it should go back on.

As others have said, you do not want any movement of the cocking piece in the striker once it is fully screwed on, the back of the striker should be just flush with the back of the cocking piece, then rotated only enough to line up the notch in the striker with the locking screw.

Spend the money and get the complete  BA tap and die set like I  did. It's a time saver and no more boogered threads to deal with...

What I ended up doing, based on everyone's input, was purchase a NOS striker and cocking piece on line, in addition to getting one from the local gun smith. Thank you all once again for help/suggestions!
