Hello
Up until recently my #4 has been working fine. Now it won't pull the shell out of the chamber.........or at least not every time. Every once and a while a shell will get pull and ejected.
I took it all apart and gave it a good cleaning.........no change?

Any ideas?

Thanks Marc

Ummm...yes....that would be a problem!! Sometimes they can disintegrate from age or shooting ammo that is too hot...too often.

Oh Side thought, you may also want to check your head space as if you cant find it locally might have to justify an order.   Also if your not using hot ammo and its simply a matter of age you may want to check the other springs, ie sear spring, safety bolt spring, firing pin spring and mag foll spring.   The weapon is getting up in years, like a few of the people of this forum from what i gather and things just break sometimes.

Another good source in the U.S. is springfield sporters.

Had the same problem with my brand new (to me) 1948 No. 4 Mk I (F) from a local Dayton OH, gunshow ($220 out the door). Was sold to me without an ejector spring. Bought a couple from Sarco, installed one and I'm good to go. I seated the new spring by smacking it gently with a brass hammer, from the front, until it snapped in place at the detent. BTW, this spring also serves as the ejector as well as extractor.

Just be sure not to damage the tny pin that fits into the equally tiny hole in the bolthead lug, it locates the spring and prevents it from popping out. I expect some lost springs are the result of this tiny protrubance becoming broken or sheared off during assembly.
Also don't squeeze the V spring together too much, this can break them, I know because I broke the first SMLE replacement spring I tried to install, luckily I'd ordered two to have a spare handy.

One should probably always keep a spare extractor spring handy, its not extactly flimsy, but can lose tension over the years, and a replacement wouldn't be easy to make because of that tiny pin.

The extractor pushes the extracted case rim against the sidewall to accomplish ejection.

BTW
I found my Lithgow wouldn't eject some commercial cases, but ejected milspec cases just fine.
The commercial cases had an undercut at the rim, and the extractor bladed was hanging up in that cut. By sharpening the edge of the blade it could slide into the undercut and didn't bind.

You'll often find extractor blades that have been ground or stoned to operate more freely. It seems to be most common with ISHY .303 SMLEs.
I think these were modified for easier single shot loading, less effort required to close the action on a single loaded cartridge rim.
Old 7mm Mausers sometimes have beveled extractors for easier single loading, likely a field modification for training rifles.

I forget where I heard this trick, probably here.
Use a length of dental floss to install the spring.
Pass the loop through the back of the spring, then through the back of the bolt head & pull to fit. Once done just pull the dental floss loop out from one end.Lamp

In addition to replacing your ejector spring I suggest you strip your bolt down and clean out all the 65 yr. old grease. Mine is a `42 model and the bolt/ firing pin was packed with hard petrified grease & cosmoline. I cleaned and re-lubed mine and polished the tip. Grease the bolt head threads too. Use Gun grease!
