Looking to start an envoy replica project with an eager gunsmith. Anyone have a working 7.62 mag they’re looking to part with?

FlyPiper907: The photo shows two Enfield magazines.  The one one the left is for the L42A1/Enforcer and have been found in the Envoy. The magazine on the right is for the 2A1 Ishapore and with very minor work can be fitted into the No4Mk1 magazine well. I mention that because the magazine on the left has a current market value of $550.00 - $750.00 USD. Depending on the seller. The 2A1 magazine can be purchased for roughly $45.00 - $55.00. That all being said however and if I may so bold as to ask. How will this eager gunsmith manage to accomplish that daunting task?...

Well, we’re not going to this to a numbers matching or nice Enfield to start with, just one that either needs love with a good receiver or a good sporter. He specializes in older US military rifles and creating sub-MOA performers; NOT that we suspect we’d ever get that out of Enfield, but we’re both curious what we can get out of the rifle platform.

Him and I came up with the idea after looking at roger wadhams ishapore project. This would be a no-holds barred Enfield project so something we’d definitely take our time with. We’re going to need parts first before everything gets tackled.

I’ve thought about the Ishy mags too. Either would work. He does want me to ask around if the bottom metal of the 7.62 mags is specific to the 7.62 mags or if that metal is the same as the 303 mags

I have re-indexed two 2A1 Ishapore 7.62mm barrels onto the No4Mk1 reciever. It was a small task that also requires creating specifically sized boltheads that need to be rehardened once completed.  The magazine well needs to be opened up in four specific areas on the bottom of the reciever to correctly accept the L42A1 magazines as well. I did manage to find a new old stock, unissued 7.62mm Canadian Arsenal made No4 contoured barrel for a No4Mk1. It still needed to be indexed to the reciever and some attention to headspace was needed also. The photo shows from top to bottom:
Faux L8A5T with the Canadian Arsenal 7.62mm barrel.
Maltby No4Mk1/2 with the 2A1 Ishapore barrel
No4Mk2 with the 2A1 Ishapore barrel cut to 20".
If you plan on creating something like these? Stick with an actual 2A/2A1. It will save you alot of headaches and unnecessary cussing...

Goosic,

Do you mean stick with the Ishy receiver too?

Yes. The Ishapore reciever was intended to be used with the 7.62x51mm NATO cartridge and as such, it was tested at a higher proof than that of the 303B. If you intend to sporterize your choice of 7.62mm Enfield, use the Ishapore.
The bottom rifle pictured was by far, the most difficult build i have completed to date. Re-indexing the barrel, resizing and rehardening the bolthead, reshaping the firing pin to get the proper pin protrusion, removing material from the bottom of the reciever so the L42A1 magazine would fit and function properly.  I could have used a 2A1 at a third of the cost.

I’ve actually just found a complete L42 stock set. Here’s where we’re at:

1. 7.62 steel/carbon fiber barrel
2. L42 stock set.

Still in need of a good strong receiver and magazine. Would you still stick with an Ishy receiver? I’m aware of the possible coming magazine issue; we may have to custom make one.

Use a No. 4 action, and load for .303 velocities/pressures.

Where is the barrel from and who makes it?

Just my two cents here. They also offer a .243 barrel. The 243 and 308 share the same case dimensions below the shoulder. The 243 has a much lower PSI as well and makes for a very accurate round. Give them a No4Mk1 barrel for a template and have them cut one for a .243.

Would you be entertaining trades for one of those magazines?

One more question: my guess is, because the 6.5x55 cartridge is similar to (and in some cases longer than) the 303 case, using one of these 7.62 mags to correct for the rimless problem would only result in the cartridge binding. Is my thinking correct?
