Been working on restoring my 1917 No.1 Mkii. Picked up a replacement stock set and the new stock has the metal strip at the rear where the butt stock screw mates up. My bolt has the square tip. Do I need to replace it with the newer style bolt?

I'm currently refinishing a 1921 Lithgow No.1 MkIII* and have the furniture off the rifle.  My rifle has the square tipped butt stock screw also and I've attached a picture of my fore end.  If it looks anything like yours then the bolt should work.

Sorry, my forestock does not have a notch cut for the square tip of my bolt. The old sporterized forearm did not have the metal re-enforcement. It was the wood square notch. In addition, the old square tip bolt does not extend enough to thread into the receiver.
I ordered a new bolt from Libertytree. Hope it fits ok.

you can use either, BUT the forend must be removed, or replaced AFTER the butt stock to prevent gouging or damage to that area.
The idea was to use the metal to "lock" the square bolt head to prevent it turning in use.
