the gun market is just nuts. 3 days to go and it's up to $1,530.00 with 22 bids. doesn't even look the right color furniture to me. not blonde enough.

Interesting auction. Numbers matching everything. That price is quite high and likely to go higher. The rifle does look to be a high quality piece, the color of the wood to me isn't a distraction.

Devrep.
The scratches are most likely from it being a rifle that was part the Irish Contract No4Mk2 's that were never delivered and put into reserve stores. According to the PF333000 serial number. It should have a serialized matching POF No9 Mk1 blade bayonet with it as well...

Doesn’t look like it’s been fired much at all. But the metal finish looks rather rough compared to my PF Mk 2. Might just be the lighting....
If this truly is an unissued and not fired (except for proof rounds and maybe a few rounds fired from previous owners), I might go that high in price.

I was saying that the scratches show the actual blonde color.

The rifle looks as if it has been handled alot and has been stained with dirt and oils to me. Not all Beechwood had the Blonde look to it. Alot of the Beechwood looked just like the one for sale. All three pieces of wood are Beechwood. The cheek riser is untreated, the No8 buttstock has the Blonde stain with refined linseed oil applied, and the No4 has a gunstock stain with Stand oil applied.

so are you saying the military stained the stocks before oiling when the rifles were new? I assumed not.

No, not stained, just immersed in hot oil for a while, Devrep.
Beech will got quite dark with handling and use. Here's one I sold recently; |

I get that but the gun in the auction is supposed to be like new and unmolested. I'm going by the dozens of new 1950's versions I've seen on line and a few in person that are bright blonde. his is in that same 1954-1955 batch and looks nothing like the others. I don't think it's the lighting.

The grain is wrong for beech or birch to my eye as well. Might it be walnut thats very pale or bleached somehow? Maybe just old dirty cosmolene?

There is a dealer in the London area that has a few of the 'Irish contract' No4s for sale, in fact one of the lads I shoot with bought one, they are very light in colour almost white, its a nice rifle but it was expensive (£1800) and as soon as he put a round through it it lost is USP and half its value!.

Yes they tend to have been cleaned with some chemical when unwrapped because as is they are incredibly greasy. A lot of the cleaners also bleach the wood & leach out the oils as well as removing grime. Mine is several years old now & the linseed is darkening back slowly to a beautiful dark honey color. |
